IT firm Sanwha will set up a business process outsourcing centre in
Kolkata to handle English-based BPO work, a company official said.

The Hong Kong-based group would establish a 50-seater facility in the
West Bengal capital in partnership with a US company promoted by P K
Sandell-controlled Eltec Group.

Sandell told that it's a first-of-its-kind operation in India by a
Chinese firm.

"If the model succeeds, we expect a lot of mid-sized Indian companies
to invest (in starting BPO centres targeting Fortune-500 companies
operating in China)," he said.

Sandell said almost all Fortune-500 companies of the world have
operations in China not just in trading but in manufacturing and
production as well.

"They have got a demand for English language-based BPO operations. But
they are not managing it on outsourcing basis but to cut costs is
defeated. There is a situation that's contradictory", he explained.

He said there is a tremendous scope and opportunity for BPO work of
MNCs operating in China, to be divided between India and China -- by
setting up one center in India to handle English-based BPO and another
by a Chinese firm back home to cater to Mandarin-based BPO.

Sandell, who is co-chairman of the China-India Software Association,
said a proposal in this context to bring together Chinese and Indian
firms is "already very strong".

A successful model of Indo-China BPO operation would open up a lot of
opportunities for medium-scale companies, he said.
