Before making my point i would breifly like to introduce myself. I have
just completed my masters from Jamia Mass communication research
center. Course that i did is only one of its kind in India, Development
Communication. I have just returned from workshop by International
Committee of Red Cross. Topic of the workshop was "Reporting armed
conflict" media debates its role. There was distinguished panel of
editors and senior media professionals. Siddhart Vardarajan, B G
Verghese, A G Noorani, Amar Chandel, Saeed Naqvi, Satish Jacob to name
a few. Speakers and participants were in consensus, that with increase
in number of channels the quality has definitely gone down. With the
emergence of 24 hours news channel, news or breaking news have become
business. What is significant and should be kept in mind is that media
or news channels are owned by businessmen, sole motive being profit.
All this has led to deterrioration in the quality of news.
It has also made us realise the enormous potential of media that was
untapped for long. My suggestion to the group, moderators in particular
is that a sub group should be made of media professionals.
