LOKAYAT organises:
Candlelight march and Film Festival
on 25th Anniversary of Bhopal Gas Tragedy
Dear friend,
25 years ago, on the night of December 2-3, the world's biggest
industrial disaster took place in Bhopal. Toxic gases leaked from US
corporation Union Carbide’s pesticide plant in the city.Over 8000 died
within 72 hours of the leak, another 12,000 have died in the 25 years
since then. Over one lakh continue to suffer from debilitating
gas-related illnesses. As if this was not enough, Carbide, after the
tragedy, dumped 5000 tons of toxic waste at the plant site and
disappeared. These deadly chemicals continue to contaminate the
groundwater and soil; Dow Chemicals, which has taken over Union
Carbide, refuses to clean it up. And so children continue to be born
with crippling birth defects.
Since then, the Bhopalis have continued to struggle for justice,
medical and economic rehabilitation for the victims, adequate
compensation, clean drinking water, and action against the officials
of the company due to whose criminal negligence the disaster occurred.
Meanwhile, despite these horrendous consequences, no lessons are being
drawn, conditions for the occurrence of a 1000 more Bhopals all over
the country...
