Polish Senate Approves National Ban on GMO Seeds

POLAND: April 21, 2006

WARSAW - Poland's upper house of parliament banned trade and plantings of genetically modified (GMO) seeds on Thursday, increasing the risk of a conflict with Brussels for adopting legislation that breaks EU rules.

The bill was pushed through thanks to the combined forces of the minority-ruling conservatives and their fringe allies, who want to protect Poland's image as an enviromentally-friendly state and fear biotech crops could contaminate other crops.

The reason behind countries/farmers using GM crops is for increased
productivity and increased yield per hectare. The unfortunate thing in
India is the fact that the Green Revolution was NOT as big a success as
it was projected. The lack of result proves it. The farmers are
dutifully blamed for this by the intellectuals. Policy makers should
invest in bio-famering and aim at theorizing and formalizing the
ancient farming methods that are in practice. Instead they are all bent
upon opening up farming sector to foreign players which will lead only
to further farmer suicides.
