Hey all:

I'm totally new to all this stuff. Does anybody know which shooting ranges in the area are open to the public and most convenient to get to from DC?

And if people are interested, I'll probably try to get to a range tomorrow around 7. I have a car and can drive people.

The only range in the area I've used is the one at the NRA headquarters in Virginia - it's about a 20 minute drive from DC.  http://www.nrahq.org/shootingrange/nrahqrange/

It's a nice 50-yard range, but usually very crowded - plan to wait an hour or so to get a shooting lane, and on your first visit you'll be required to take a gun safety test (very easy, as literature with the answers is provided.)  You don't have to be a member to shoot, although you pay a little more - $18 vs. $14 for members.  I believe there's also a small processing fee for your first visit.

Not to further plug the NRA (I'm not even a member) but their website also has a page that let's you search for places to shoot near you:

Yes, there are many options in Virginia. Here's a list. A quick search
of Google Maps will show you the exact location

NRA HQ Range (in Fairfax off I66 - indoor pistol/rifle)

Blue Ridge Arsenal (in Chantilly out 50)

Silver Eagle Group (near Dulles)

Bull Run Regional Park SHooting Center (for skeet/trap/sporting clays
only - no pistol/rifle)

and there's another one or two down in Woodbridge that I'm not familiar with.

Ranges in this area-
NRA HQ - great staff can shoot anything - no rentals   This is the BEST indoor range I have ever been to.
Gilberts- good staff can shoot pistols only - rental available
Clark Brothers - staff is a pain hours are 9-5 - not sure about rentals

I typically go to the range in Thursdays, but tomorrow I might skip to to go to the VCDL meeting, but if people are interested I can take my stable to the range with me.  about 1/3 of my guns are posted on the website - if you want to shoot something specific let me know you need to pay for your own ammunition.  If there is interest I will go.

Don't know about the most convenient, but the NRA range was really good.

What are you shooting?

Thanks for the email:

I'm interested in shooting shotguns, since turkey season is coming up, but that seems hard to do around here. I might end up shooting pistols instead - do you know if there's a specific set of guns I need to train with for the hunter safety exam?

This place is awesome. It's easy to get to and staff is nice and happy
to answer questions. They have all the equipment for rental, so all
you need is your wallet.
