Hey BMC Family --
I am working on an op-ed adding to the narrative of pride season via the platform of my day job at Resource Generation. The piece is responding to the fascinating (and not so simple) first-time reported data that "gay men now earn 10% more than straight men".
There are a ton of caveats to that statistic -- "gay" being measured by self-identification, white men overrepresented in the gay survey respondents, and unemployed or partially employed folks not counted in the statistic plus unemployment rates being higher for gay men. What I'm taking away is that cis maleness, whiteness, and class privilege are generally enough to maintain and boost gay men into wealth past any sexuality blocks they may experience.
The piece is an invitation and imperative for white gay men like me to join up with people of color led, queer and trans led, women and gender non conforming led, movement organizing showing up with all this 10% and more.
I would love to use this platform to elevate perspective of especially queer or trans folks of color interested in adding their voices quoted (or unquoted if preferred) to questions such as: Are you surprised by this data? What do you want to tell white gay men that are earning 10% more than straight men? It could also boost/link back to the person's organization too if appropriate.
Not sure how much traction it will get, but our Communications Director is optimistic. If you or anyone you know might be interested in chatting about it -- hit me up! My cell is
