Peace everyone! 

First, I’m sorry to say that we’re going to have to reschedule our November 16th board meeting. It’s my fault. I didn’t realize that the meeting was going to conflict with an out-of-town trip I have to take. We will get back to you soon about rescheduling. Again, sorry. I know how difficult it is to schedule meetings. 

Also, we need 100% board participation for the Brooklyn Movement Center/Central Brooklyn Food Coop’s Kickstarter campaign! We have raised more than $35,000, but we are looking to raise as much as $100,000 towards creating a home for the coop. Yes, we’re selling food of course, but this Kickstarter campaign is about creating a wrap-around center for food sovereignty and organizing.  Please use this link to back our campaign and share the link widely!

Job Opportunity: Food Sovereignty Organizer

We are the Central Brooklyn Food Coop (CBFC) an emerging consumer-owned, Black-led, grocery store set to open in 2020. CBFC envisions a future where Black residents take control of their local food system to provide healthy, affordable and sustainable food for Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights and the surrounding communities.  CBFC is incubated by the Brooklyn Movement Center, a multi-issue, social justice, community organizing group.

We’re looking for a dynamic community organizer who will take the CBFC from its current organizing phase to the opening of its retail storefront by inspiring public excitement in CBFC and dramatically expanding the CBFC membership. A competitive candidate is someone who is a fearless recruiter and has strong people and communication skills, including the effective use of digital organizing tools.

You’ll be responsible for:

• Managing a team of CBFC member volunteers to recruit and enroll at least 500 coop members;
• Building and managing a CBFC member database;
• Generating and implementing a neighborhood outreach plan;
• Building relationships and solidarity with community-based entities, partners and allies;
• Organizing events and gatherings that strengthen the CBFC community;
• Developing and facilitating political education sessions with existing and prospective members.
• Developing leadership among individual coop members;
• Working in all other ways to build deep engagement and a broad base of neighborhood support.

Experience and skills needed for the job include at least two years of experience in base-building, volunteer management, campaign management, and leadership development. Experience in food justice, cooperative development, Central Brooklyn issues and/or racial justice organizing are all advantages, but not required.

Salary and benefits include $55,000 with full benefits for a one-year, full-time position with the possibility of long-term employment.

Job Opportunity: Housing & Sustainability Organizer

We are the Brooklyn Movement Center, a Black-led, membership-based organization of Central Brooklyn residents. We build power and pursue self-determination in Bedford-Stuyvesant & Crown Heights by nurturing local leadership, waging campaigns, and winning concrete improvements in people’s lives. Over the years, our intersectional-issue organizing has included police accountability, food and environmental justice, anti-street harassment and education equity.

We’re looking for a dynamic organizer who can lead campaigns to resist displacement and build resilience among vulnerable, long-term Central Brooklynites residents. A competitive candidate is someone who is a fearless recruiter and has strong people and communication skills, including using digital organizing tools.

You’ll be responsible for:

• Recruiting low-income tenant subscribers for the Central Brooklyn Community Solar Project.
• Building the membership base of the Brooklyn Movement Center by nurturing relationships with tenants and tenant associations
• Developing and implementing a tenant organizing plan
• Recruiting low-income tenant subscribers for the Central Brooklyn Community Solar Project.
• Organizing monthly tenants’ rights clinics at BMC
• Developing leadership among tenants, tenant leaders and tenant associations members
• Work closely with BMC staff, members and volunteers on tenant organizing and anti-foreclosure campaigns

Experience and skills needed for the job include at least two years’ experience in tenant organizing that included base-building, volunteer management, campaign management, and leadership development.
