Subject: Re: [cpr-sm] 10am Fri #Askthemayor for Saheed Vassell
Hey CPR members/partners –
As you may know, we stood with the family of #SaheedVassell on Thursday to call for Mayor de Blasio and the NYPD to end the propaganda campaign to justify the killing of Saheed, and demand full transparency (press release here: bit.ly/2GUC8Mz) . We need your support to keep the momentum going strong. TODAY/FRIDAY at 10 AM, Mayor de Blasio will be on the Brian Lehrer Show for his weekly #AskTheMayor segment, where listeners can tweet and call in with questions. From 9:55-10:20am, call-in and Tweet to help push the demands for transparency and accountability for #SaheedVassell.
CALL-IN (212-433-9692) starting at 9:55 AM to ask a question. Here are some suggested questions:
- After NYPD officers killed Saheed Vassell last Wednesday, NYPD officers leaked information to the media about his alleged summonses and criminal justice involvement, an unethical and sometimes illegal practice of disclosure that your NYPD continues to do and President Obama’s Taskforce on 21st Century recommended departments cease. NYPD also selectively edited footage that seemed more aimed at justifying the killing than providing real transparency. Why is that okay and why is your administration refusing to be transparent in this case by withholding the names of officers who killed Saheed and information about their actions in the killing and potential histories of misconduct? That is not government transparency.
- Saheed Vassell was at least the 4th Black or Latino New Yorker killed by NYPD in the past 9 months, and at least 15 New Yorkers have been killed by NYPD during your mayoralty, yet you seem more willing to express outrage about police killings of civilians outside of NYC. How is that real change or setting a national progressive standard when Black and Latino people in this city are still being unjustly and unnecessarily killed by police so frequently?
- When officers are involved in shootouts where they may be injured and injure or kill someone, the NYPD has no problem releasing officers’ names but when it’s a one-sided shooting where police shoot and/or kill a civilian, like Saheed Vassell, the NYPD is hiding the names from the public. It has been over a week since Saheed was killed and the NYPD still has only released vague information about the officers, not their names or substantive information about their misconduct history and actions that day when they killed Saheed. How are you justifying withholding this information, even as other police departments around the country release it, and why did you mislead the public by claiming it was the Attorney General’s office as the New York Times exposed your false claim on Tuesday?
SAMPLE TWEETS (begin Tweeting at 9:55 AM and RT each other by following #SaheedVassell & #AskTheMayor) :
Why are @NYCMayor & #NYPD refusing to be transparent about killing of #SaheedVassell, withholding identities of the officers who killed him, info about their actions and potential histories of misconduct? #AskTheMayor
After #NYPD killed #SaheedVassell, it unethically leaked his alleged summonses & crim justice involvement while refusing to even release names of officers. Why does @NYCMayor allow this type of smearing of dead victims to continue while hiding officers' identities? #AskTheMayor
#SaheedVassell was at least 4th Black or Latinx NYer killed by #NYPD in past 9 months, and at least 15th NYer killed by #NYPD during @BilldeBlasio as @NYCMayor. How is that change or setting a “progressive” standard? #AskTheMayor
After #NYPD killed #SaheedVassell, it has engaged in propaganda campaign against the victim while trying to deflect from actions of officers who killed him. Why are you hiding officers’ identities & their actions of immediately shooting upon arrival on scene? #AskTheMayor
After #NYPD killed #SaheedVassell, it has only sought to release tailored information to try justifying his killing but practically nothing about officers who drove up and immediately shot and killed him, similar to #TamirRice. How is this transparency? #AskTheMayor
With at least 15 Black/Latinx NYers killed by #NYPD during de Blasio admin, why does @NYCMayor seem more outraged about police killings outside of NYC, like #StephonClark, when police dept he controls continues to kill Black & Latinx NYers so frequently w/ impunity? #AskTheMayor
