Hi BMC fam,

Hope you all are well and on your way fun weekend things. As you know, the #DefundNYPD campaign ended Tuesday night with the City Council’s vote to approve the Mayor’s budget.

While we didn’t get $1B out of the NYPD expense budget, we gained important ground on the road to abolition by shifting conversations about policing throughout the City! And most notably, we successfully created a media narrative that made it impossible for the Mayor to claim a phony victory.

We now have the experience of leading on a city budget advocacy campaign, which sets us up well for next year’s fight and also marks a huge step forward in BMC’s development. From July 6-10, BMC will be practicing rest and staff will be off.

WHAT’S NEXT??
When we’re back, we’ll be debriefing and scheming on the FY22 budget! If you want to get in on the organizing action, mark your calendar for Wednesday, August 5 at 6pm. This will likely be a zoom meeting but we might hold it in a park if there’s enough interest. RSVP here!

This is a chance for folks who have been plugged in to the campaign to reflect and move on to next steps, which I’ll be reaching out to some of you about individually this month. We’re thinking about beefing up our field organizing game + our capacity to do public and political education. You should join us!

ABOLITION CRASH COURSE
If you’re interested in an online 4-day crash course on abolition, register here! We’ll be doing some study on abolition in Aug/Sept, but this is an opportunity to jump in from July 13-16.

THANK YOU 🙏🏿
Last but not least, so much LOVE to you all for throwing down. I’ve been out in front a lot, so I just wanna name a few of the many ways YOU ALL made June an overall successs for BMC.
  • Besides #DefundNYPD, in June the BMC staff team held down emergency food delivery, hosted three candidate forums, released three civic engagement podcast episodes, supported the development of the Black Freedom Project, engaged BMC leadership and core members, held our first Black Family Meeting and hosted a housing webinar & an online Juneteenth block party! Shoutout to Mark, Shaquana, Michael, Raina, Tia & Jelani!
  • Sabine, Erica & Patrick volunteered to provide nearly round-the-clock support on BMC’s #DefundNYPD communications & public education!
  • Beyond supporting the CPR #DefundNYPD reportJames has just been a budget analyzing superstar, giving crucial help to the CPR staff team.
  • BMC members supported the Black organizer formation that held down the city hall occupation! 💪🏿💪🏿
  • We supported or hosted FOUR direct actions! Big love to Omari, Theo, Kabir, Erika, Brandon, Yaneth, Jeffrey, Fernando, Sulu & Sofia.
  • The #DefundNYPD twitter group was born! So many folks amplified our messages all month all over social media and special shout to Sulu for also pitching in on the BMC twitter feed.
  • Braeden & Kofo started running the bi-weekly BMC Power Hour, when members do fundraising phone banking!
  • Our political powerhouses MonifaSharon & Maurice supported on strategy & so much more!
There are countless other actions you all took (including taking my random support calls)—THANK YOU for stepping powerfully into leadership during a wild, wild time!

Peace,
Anthonine
