Introduction to Transylvanian Fiddle Music with Zoë
Aqua
Transylvania, a fascinating region located in modern-day Northwest Romania, is a crossroads of many cultures. Zoë will share tunes and stories from her two years living in Transylvania as a Fulbright research partner. We will learn four tunes, each representing
four Transylvanian cultures: Romanian, Romani, Hungarian, and Jewish. This course is targeted for bowed-string instruments: violin, viola, cello, and bass. We will start by learning the fiddle part (melody), but will also talk about chords and accompaniment
as well. All levels welcome. We will learn by ear, with source recordings provided.
Mondays, April 6, 13, 20, and 27, 2026
5:00 p.m. Pacific, 6:00 Mountain, 7:00 Central, 8:00 Eastern.

As an understudy of master players Georgi Doichev and Vassil Bebelekov, Varol brings decades of experience performing and teaching the Bulgarian gaida. This class will focus on characteristic ornamentation and the melodic vocabulary that defines the Thracian
style. Repertoire will draw from a range of sources, including private lessons, professional recordings, and the living social contexts of parties and festivals. This course is best suited for players who are already comfortable on the gaida and play by ear
or read music; that said, Varol is an experienced teacher who will gladly meet students where they are!
Wednesdays, April 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2026
5:00 p.m. Pacific, 6:00 Mountain, 7:00 Central, 8:00 Eastern.
