Hey, everybody...
I never dreamed when I caught my flight to Kansas
City on June 7th, that I would return on June 13th to a blazing forest fire
within five miles of our home. As I topped Monument Hill, I looked east
and witnessed plumbs of smoke rising as high as 28,000 feet (according the
local news reports). The Black Forest is a highly preferred place to live
here in Colorado Springs with beautiful Ponderosa Pines and flowers
everywhere. Now, it is a disaster area with 473 homes burned to the
ground, two people killed, 18,000 acres destroyed and 41,000 people
evacuated from their homes.
Kathy met me outside as I drove into the driveway of our
home. She had already packed up some necessities as soon as they gave
the pre-evacuation notice (meaning we had to be ready to leave within 10
min at any given notice) and we proceeded to "get out of Dodge" and head for our
property west of the city. It is pretty sobering to think that all you own
can be destroyed in a matter of minutes! Of course, we had already started
praying for God's intervention and His comfort helped us to relax the stay
focused.
After two days, we returned to our home all safe and
sound and with hearts of thanksgiving we gave Him praise! However,
many precious people are left with nothing but the clothes on their backs, I
know you'll increase your pray support for them.
We cannot thank you enough for your prayers, emails,
telephone calls, etc during this week of "unexpected interruption" in our
lives. Somehow God will get the glory for this tragedy here in Colorado
Springs, just as He did in the Waldo Canyon fire that hit the west side of our
city one year ago next week. Pray that people will come to know Christ
during this crisis.
Your friends,
John & Kathy
