Naseem Hijazi was the writer who turned the lights and feats of many Muslim generals into literary soaps and dwelled upon the epoch-making Muslim era. He was born in 1914 at a village of Sujaanpur in district Gurdaspur. He was christened as Sharif Hussain but is more commonly known by his pseudonym Naseem Hijazi. He along with his family migrated to Pakistan after independence and went on to live most of his life in Pakistan. He passed away in March 1996.
Though he had contemporaries like Ibne Safi, Saddat Hassan Minto, and Shafiq ur Rehman but still he left behind an indelible impression upon the minds of all his readers. He was adept at blending history with fairytale romanticism. Every single word in his writing kept his readers interested and mused them to transcend over the limits of this world into the one portrayed by him.
Naseem Hijazi can be compared with Walter Scott for reviving romanticism while describing the long gone history. While Walter Scott is blamed and flayed for his lack of historical references; Naseem Hijazi is credited for citing examples, his through knowledge of history and the art of creating fictional bounds to take the fancy of readers.
In his novels he has highlighted both the rise and the plight of the Muslims. His novels ‘Muhammad Bin Qasim’, ‘Akhri Ma’rka’, ‘Kaisar-o-Qisra’, and ‘Qafla-i-Hijaz’ describe the era of Islam’s rise to a juggernaut in every walk of life. ‘Yousuf bin Tashfeen’, ‘Shaheen’, ‘Kaleesa aur Aag’, and ‘Andheri raat kay musafir’ pertain to the Spanish Reconquista.
‘Aakhri Chattaan’ is about the gruesome and cataclysmic battles between Muslims and the tyrant Mongols. It wreathes the military geniuses of Genghis Khan, the undaunted courage of Sultan Jalal ud Din and the vulnerability and unworthy condition of the Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad. His two Novels ‘Muazzam Ali’ and ‘Aur Talwaar toot gai’ are about the British conquest of India; the latter being the sequel of the former. Muazzam Ali was a valiant soldier who fought in the battles of Panipat and Sringapattam. The novel revolves around his audacity and the search for lost glory and freedom. ‘Aur Talwaar toot gai’ is about the endeavors of Sultan tipu against the trio of Marhattas, Nizam and East India Company and culminates in the martyrdom of Sultan Tipu.
He also wrote a novel on the independence named as ‘Khaak aur Khoon’. Many believe it to be his anecdote.
Naseem Hijazi’s writings enjoy a large reader base even after his demise. His spells casting writings had hexed the masses back then andcontinue to do so. Many people are of the opinion that many of his movies will provide films equal in grandeur to ‘ben-hur’, ‘braveheart’, and ‘the patriot’. But due to the lack of attention a great literary asset is untouched by film icons.
The crux of the matter being that he along with all his quintessential literary stuff will always remain alive in our hearts. He was a motivational source and will serve as one in the years to come. Let’s pray for the repose of the long deceased.
