Hi Group,

Has anyone else had any problems with spreader cracks? I'm dealing with Sparcraft US now for new ones but they have to made... special order.

Hi, Jim

No problems here, after about 16,000 nms. What's the diagnosis from the riggers?

Cheers
AJ

Hi AJ,
They think it may have something to do with the mast pumping... do you have the tall rig?

Cheers,

Jim

Hi, Jim

No we have the short rig (I think the difference is less than a metre). First time I noticed mast pumping was going up wind in a sloppy see in the Adriatic. Fitting the inner forestay (with runners) is a complet cue. in any conditions, mast cannot pump at all. Most satisfying - highly recommended.

Yeah I think that's going to be the solution. I have the Beneteau inner stay... time to fit some check stays.

Thanks for the info AJ.

Hi, Jim

I think the key is the attachment point of the inner forestay to the mast. Too high and it won't stop the mast pumping. Ours goes to just above the top spreaders, and the deck attachment point is just behind the forward deck hatch (it is actually attached to the fwd cabin forward bulkhead).

This means that when we tension the inner forestay, it pulls the top part of the mast forward a little, giving it a nice bend - this tension is then countered with the runners. Works a treat.

We're flying up to Fiji tomorrow for another family stint on the boat, then one of my sons and I will sail back to NZ, departing Lautoka on or about the 4th October. Then summer should come to NZ!

Cheers

AJ,

Do you have a picture of your runners setup?

Cheers,
