to Beneteau 49/Oceanis 50 Owners
Hi All,
Had a great race... Finished 4th on corrected time. The boat performed
very well, we had several 250 days. Sitting at 10's and 11's in ocean
seas... hitting 13's occasionally. Sea state along the Washington -
Oregon coasts were typically 15' every 6th one had a surprise in it.
Tactically because of very favorable winds we were able to fly very
close to the rhumb line. Blew out the number one kite, sew job
required. Six days out of Hawaii after being on one jibe for four days
we had positioned ourselves for the final jibe to the mark. The crew
carefully pre-centered the boom and jibed thru... ouch the boom had a
crease and a crack at the dead end fitting. Main down, trysail up...
number 2 kite.
A new boom will be here in Maui today or tomorrow. I will be
sectioning out the failure point for analysis for when I get back to
Vancouver. An engineer affiliated with the race said it looks like a
classic cantilever failure. Either under engineered or a bad
extrusion. Charleston Spar has been contacted thru Beneteau and I will
be claiming warranty. Luckily I had a Beneteau sales rep on board and
a rigger from CSR Marine.
Maybe there is a reason Beneteau went to the arch? I have always been
leery of mid sheeted booms... for good reason perhaps. Or it could
just be a bad extrusion...I'll keep you all posted. Interestingly, the
load design of the Lewmar "Ocean 2" traveler is exceeded with the tall
rig! HMMM.
Leaving Maui on July 27.
Aloha, Jim
