Wondering if any owners in the group have added water tanks under the
main cabin floor.
I'm trying to create more water tankage, and looking for suggestions.
Currently have twin fuel set up under the aft cabins.
Watermaker complimenting the single forward water tank.

Thanks,

David

? What happened to the second tank that comes with the boat?

Mark:

When I commissioned the boat, I changed the aft port water water tank,
to a factory supplied diesel tank. Good idea on paper, but sets
limits on water usage, and dependance on water maker reliability.

Under the main salon flooring, three specially made tanks could sit
slightly to starboard, and provide 50 plus gallons. This would
slightly alter balance of boat, but given our dinghy in the air, and
adjusted fuel as ballast, I doubt I'd notice it.
However the tanks, in a "one off" production are expensive, certainly
if they are not a good solution.

Again, any good ideas out there???

Thanks

We installed a 25 gallon bladder tank just forward of the engine start battery compartment. It's plumbed into the water pressure manifold.
Our watermaker is in the aft lazerette next to the generator.

Do you have the manufacturer of the flexible bladder? Price?
Could two bladders be paralleled?
Did you screw down your floorboards after installing????

Has anyone screwed down their floorboards?

Hi David,

I have "screwed" down my floor boards using PYI quarter turn fasteners.

Hi, Mark

We did things a little differently - to add fuel capacity, we installed two custom made plastic tanks (100 litres each) in the lazarette, one on each side. They are made by a company that specialises in fuel tanks for racing cars - very strong.

They gravity feed the main fuel tank.

Perhaps you could do something similar for water - another 200 odd litres would probably help.

So we have the original water tanks, along with a watermaker (which lives under the starboard settee).

Photos are on the website ("Hawkeye")

Hi, Jim

I uploaded a picture of our new clothes washer installation ("Washer Hawkeye 2") - it's in the starboard aft cabin locker. Have compensated for loss of space by installing two new lockers, will upload pix when I have them.

I see the Vic Maui starts on the 1st July - how are your preparations going?

Cheers

Hi AJ,

Already...just waiting for the start... well maybe, just took my traveler control blocks apart for inspection... all the bearings need to be replaced. Lewmar parts are back ordered 5 weeks min delivery locally...contacted Lewmar UK, we'll see how quickly they can deliver.
Maybe switching to a Harken system... oh it never ends.

Cheers,

Jim

My sympathies, Jim - and you're right, it is never-ending, but the upside still outweighs the downside, every time!

I'm doubly hammered, since we also have a Beneteau 10R (First 34.7) for round the cans and coastal racing here in NZ - just replaced the vang, and a couple of jammers, and a couple of halyards (all state of the art racing gear - code for absurdly expensive!). Not looking for sympathy, though - if I'm not sailing, I'm thinking about it!

Interestingly, I have discovered a different brand, though - we use Selden gear now, there is a wholesaler here in NZ who brings everything in direct - approx half price of Lewmar/Harken gear, and great quality. I'd have to say that, in general, most of the Lewmar gear doesn't hold up well - the 34.7 came with Harken equipment, which is, I think, better. We've already exploded a couple of Lewmar blocks on Hawkeye (one mainsheet and one kite).

I note from the Vic-Maui website that your Dad was the pioneer! Love the connection - it's great that you're competing.

All the best - get into those elusive trades first and you're away!

Cheers

PS off to Tonga (Vava'u) on the 25th, hoping for our SE trades. Will try to wash clothes when crossing the Tropic of Capricorn!

Hi, Jim

Not that I know of - 5 weeks seems like an awfully long time to supply a few Lewmar blocks though - have you tried anyone else ? Seems a bit far fetched, but I'd have thought they are a stock item?

Jim:

Not sure where I saw the thread about the stock traveller in the B49,
but it wasn't good.
It was either on this blog, or somewhere else.. It seemed that the
maultiple failure comments were that the traveller is undersized and
that in Europe it is upspec'd from the factory now, especially with
the tall rig.

While we are on topics of interest.

Vang.... I had the straight tang at the mast connection folded under
load. First Yachts tried to say I crash jibed to get that kind of
deflection, but as it was in the first summer with the boat, I know we
did not. I worry that it might be undersized for the tall rig as
well. Beneteau replaced it under warranty.

How many sleeps til you leave. Maybe you could start a new thread,
and keep us up to speed...

Remember, we are all living the race with you...

Hi David,

Yes, the traveler is under sized considering it's mid boom sheeting.
The control blocks are a real concern... plastic race with a threaded bolt. I would highly recommend everyone inspect theirs.

Race start for group 2 is July 3. We leave for Victoria on the 30th... better get busy getting my traveler problem sorted out.

Cheers,

Jim

(I decides to start a new thread so that the subject line chould be changed and not get lots under the water tank thread)

There are Lewmar ball bearing replacement 'sheaves' for the traveller control blocks that drop in the place of the "sleeve bearing" plastic-on-plastic originals, and aare designed as a performance upgrade for the traveller used on the 49 & 54. The older Oceanis 50 has a different type of end stops and cars so there is no option without replacing the end stops and cars. Not sure about the new 50 but is probably uses the same ones as the 49 and 54.

I replaced them on my 54 just as I did on my 461.  Takes only moments to do, and doesn't even require re-reeving the lines. The ball bearing replacements seemed to hold up very well for several years of racing my 461 (Newport-Bermuda, Vineyard races in years when other boats dropped out due to too much wind, etc) and made handling the traveller much easier - I have a rule that the traveller is never winched, only hand pulled.

The only retailer I can find in the US who tends to keep them in stock is Mauri Pro sailing. The come in sets of 4, and I needed two sets (I changed out both the ones in the end stops and the ones in the car, so I needed 8 sheaves).

 http://www.mauriprosailing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=LEW29472970

I also re-routed the traveller control line. As intended by the factory, the lines make their loops around, then exit an end stop going forwards to a turning block, when turns them around and sends them back under the false deck. That 180 degree turn with a very small diameter sheave, while allowing a very "pretty" look, was a huge friction point. I did re-reeve the lines and have the line exit the end stop and go straight to the line clutch. Much easier to work with, though requires a small slit in the dodger.

I also replaced all of the 90mm "Synchro" blocks in the mainsheet with Lewmar 80MM HL race blocks. Took a LOT of friction out of the mainsheet system when under load, and many times when a winch used to be needed to trim, I can trim by hand, and that's with the 54's mast which is a bit taller than even the tall rig 49. Of course I had to install 7 of these $350 blocks to do that part of the job, but the biggest benefit is achieved by changing just the one at the mast base and the first one on the car where the line makes the tightest turns and "all" the line has to pass for every adjustment.

Hi Mark,

I just ordered the replacement shives from Mauripro. Also found two end block units to carry as spares.
I too have replaced every block with Harken or Garhauer. The vang was replaced year one with a http://www.vangmaster.com/.

The genoa foot blocks are also Harken lock offs.

Thanks for the info.
