Hi All,

Has anyone installed a trysail and or storm jib on their '49?

Thanks,

Jim

Nope,
I would if I was headed off shore multi day type stuff, but not yet
there.

Hi Andrew,

Do you have pictures of the installation?
The trysail is a requirement of ISAF for the race...Too bad, the little bugger is pricey because of the bat cars.

Hi, Jim

Firstly, thanks for your reply, Jim.

We are currently fitting an inner forestay and running backstays for
offshore (our boat is based in NZ, and is currently in Fiji).

The inner forestay deck fitting that Beneteau supplies is a bit weak,
so we are designing a beefier version, it be flush in the deck and
attach to the anchor locker bulkhead.

The inner forestay will be detachable, using a tensioning long shank
snap shackle. We'll use a hanked on strom jib on the inner forestay.
Running backstays will be set up so they can be led forward to the cap
shrouds when not in use.

In terms of a trysail, our alternative is to put a 4th reef point in
the mainsail - we'll see how this goes, but should be practical, and
provide good balance.

The Vic - Maui is a great race, we did it years ago (1990, I think) on
my father's boat (a Moody 44).

Best regards

Hi, Jim

Not yet on the pictures, still in the planning stages. I don't
particularly like the Beneteau inner forestay, as it is really
designed to make the rig into a cutter, and this is not what we are
trying to achieve. Objective for us (have just been talking to the
engineer) is more a babystay from which we can hang a storm jib on
hanks. The idea is that this will be attached to the mast quite low,
somewhere near the second spreader attachment point, and will be
supported by running backstays. The idea is to have the storm job low
and near to the mast, to keep the centre of effort where we want it.
Bonus is increased rig rigidity in bouncy conditions (most passages to
and from the South Pacific Islands to NZ involve some form of
unpleasant weather, usually near NZ!)

Local stainless expert/engineer will be drawing up a deck fitting for
the babystay, which will be flush and involve a large underdeck
backing plate to spread the load, as there is no bulkhead at the
location we want the deck fitting.

My experience with trysails over the years is mixed - I prefer a 4th,
very deep reef in the main. Any more than 45 kts and we will be down
to storm jib alone. I think the key to heavy weather with our type of
boat (wide stern, high sides, buoyant) is to keep sailing fast.

Best regards

Andrew

Interesting Andrew.

I'd like to see pictures when you have it rigged.
The Trysail unfortunately isn't negotiable...ISAF rule.

Have you installed a SSB? My boat is SSB ready... ground plane, insulated back stay etc. But I am looking for installation options for the ICOM M802.

Regards,

Jim

Hi Max,

The copper SSB ground plane runs from the stern down the hull seam to the keel.
I had it installed during commissioning. I can tell you that my ICOM M802/AT-140 Tuner and Pactor PTC II USB Pro (III upgrade) works flawlessly. I use Sailmail's Airmail.app... works great!

I'll upload photos soon of the radio install.

Hi Mike I uploaded a file: ICOM-M802-Installation.jpg showing the installation.

Jim,  I plan to have an ICOM M802/AT-140 Tuner installed soon for the

installation locations?

Mike,

The bracket is part of the radio order... just order the M802 flush mount kit.
The radio should be mounted as close as possible to your main house battery bank, this allows for minimal volt/amp drop during transmit.

Cheers,

Jim

Jim,  thank you very much for the information and photos.  The location of radio and speaker will work out as I only have the Raymarine Sirius Weather module
in that cupboard.  Adding the piano hinge to make the cupboard door side opening makes a lot of sense.

I'll have to find another place for the main radio.  I have a Xantrex 2000 watt inverter/charger under the nav station seat.  Was any other location considered?

Did the bracket/frame holding the remote head unit and speaker in the cupboard door come with the radio or was that fabricated or a special order?

After the Annapolis Boat Show I will be moving the boat to Hampton, VA for the Caribbean 1500 and plan to have the install done there.
The photos will be a big help to the installer.

Thanks again.

Hi Mike,

Here are a few pictures of where the radio head and radio are mounted. The antenna tuner is mounted at the base of the backstay on the side of the life raft insert.
