Hello everyone, I'm a new joiner to the group. I actually own a 54
which is a close cousin to the 49, and the last ot the "archless"
models. Many of the systems of the 49 and new 50 are identical to the
systems on the 54, and as I've got the only privately owned 54 in the
Americas, I hope that I can share what I know and learn from all of
you.
On the topic of LEDs, I converted my last boat (a Beneteau 461) to all
LEDs, and had to adapt slightly to the fixtures in the 54. What I did
was this:
All overhead reading lights are a "brick" style replacement. The first
generation were sold as the "superbrick" by some retailers. The best
pricing was from
earthled.com, and I highly advocate them. The
richness of the color tone of the woodwork is the closest to the
original halogens with these compared to a half dozen other "warm"
bulbs I tried. Buy one of theirs and try it, then see their quantity
pricing when you want to buy a lot.
I still haven't found a replacement for the "tube lights" that my wife
likes. All the rejects have moved on to replace the bulbs in the
locker light fixtures, but I'm still on the hunt for a very warm bulbh
to use in the "tube lights".
nav lights I replaced with the AquaSignal direct replacements for the
bow and stern lights. Direct swap for the bow units, had to seal one
hole and drill another for the stern light replacement. For the anchor
light I replaces with an Orca Green anchor/tricolor, though Hella has
a new unit I'd consider as an alternative.
For the deck/steaming light, I wanted to dramatically reduce the power
draw of the deck light (so that I could leave it on all night if
desired to avoid collisions by drunken dinghy drivers who don't look
up), while not worrying so much about the steaming light. I found that
the Forespar fixture uses standard MR16 bulbs for the deck light
function, and there are a LOT of MR16 LED bulbs on the internet. The
deck light piece does not require regulatory approval, so I could pick
what I wanted. I found a 60 degree beam, warm white LED MR16 flood on
Ebay, and it illuminates from the mast to beyond the anchor roller,
bathing everything in a nice warm light. It also protrudes from the
mast a lot less than the stock fixture, making less of a snag risk.
I'm almost embarassed to say that I'm about to add underwater lights
to the boat, to amuse my wife and our dog. I selected the Aqualuma "6
series" in blue, for which they are making custom lens inserts to
better direct the light "aftward" instead of down, due to the mounting
angle. They'll be installed in about 3 weeks, so I'll hopefully post
pictures in about a month. David - what brand of underwater lights
did you install?
