HI all. We're replacing our bulbs with LED's, and went with the
Superbrights recommended by Dustin. So far so good, save for a couple
of things, which prompts this post:

1. Has anyone replaced the bulbs for the reading lights above each of
the berths? The ones that fit into the overhead fixtures don't fit
because they are too large to fit into the tubular metal fitting.
There are 7 of these on the boat (3 in the master cabin, and 2 each in
both aft cabins; we have the three cabin model). Has anyone found a
replacement bulb for these that fits?

2. Has anyone replaced the under-cabinet strip lights with LEDs? If
so, same question in terms of recommendations for which ones to use.
West Marine sells strips, but I just can't tell if they'll work (I
suspect not).

3. Has anyone replaced the running and anchor bulbs with LEDs? And
of course, if so, which ones did you use that work?

Thanks everyone, and I hope your respective seasons are getting off to
good starts!

Dan

Hi Dan,

The only bulbs I have replaced are the interior ceiling light bulb with lights from http://www.ledwholesalers.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=277
and the anchor light with a bulb from Marine Beam http://marinebeam.com/bale15lebami.html

I was going to replace the bulbs in the nav lights but replacement led bulbs were not approved without changing the lens... at least by the VicMaui race committee.

Cheers,

Jim

Dan et al:

I replaced the rope light with (of all things) IKEA led strips, about
two years ago.
On the starboard side, I extended these past the nav station light all
the way to the aft head bulkhead ( yes I removed the nav light).
I did the same on port side, all the way to the port cabin bulkhead.
I left it on the original wire and switch with no problems.
I can't remember but I think the load dropped by 2 amps. It looks
great, even with the cool white spectrum (warm white was not
available).

I was so enthusiastic that I ordered a stock Beneteau electrical
switch, and did the same in the forward master. It looks classic.

Lastly, I also added two DR.LED Cobra flexible neck lights in the
forward berth for reading at night. Mounted in the bookshelf area, so
the light comes from behind when you are reading. Fantastic, but were
extremely challenging to supply power to, while making it look like it
was factory installed.

I will also change out the rest of the interior G4 lights this year
for LED equivalents, as mine are just starting to burn out (hull #8).

I have also placed an LED light in the forward sail locker, both aft
lazarettes, and the engine compartment.

And for the Med touch, I added two stern underwater LED lights. I
downloaded a picture of all the fish....

No problems with any of the above so far...

Hello everyone, I'm a new joiner to the group. I actually own a 54
which is a close cousin to the 49, and the last ot the "archless"
models. Many of the systems of the 49 and new 50 are identical to the
systems on the 54, and as I've got the only privately owned 54 in the
Americas, I hope that I can share what I know and learn from all of
you.

On the topic of LEDs, I converted my last boat (a Beneteau 461) to all
LEDs, and had to adapt slightly to the fixtures in the 54. What I did
was this:

All overhead reading lights are a "brick" style replacement. The first
generation were sold as the "superbrick" by some retailers. The best
pricing was from earthled.com, and I highly advocate them. The
richness of the color tone of the woodwork is the closest to the
original halogens with these compared to a half dozen other "warm"
bulbs I tried. Buy one of theirs and try it, then see their quantity
pricing when you want to buy a lot.

I still haven't found a replacement for the "tube lights" that my wife
likes. All the rejects have moved on to replace the bulbs in the
locker light fixtures, but I'm still on the hunt for a very warm bulbh
to use in the "tube lights".

nav lights I replaced with the AquaSignal direct replacements for the
bow and stern lights. Direct swap for the bow units, had to seal one
hole and drill another for the stern light replacement. For the anchor
light I replaces with an Orca Green anchor/tricolor, though Hella has
a new unit I'd consider as an alternative.

For the deck/steaming light, I wanted to dramatically reduce the power
draw of the deck light (so that I could leave it on all night if
desired to avoid collisions by drunken dinghy drivers who don't look
up), while not worrying so much about the steaming light. I found that
the Forespar fixture uses standard MR16 bulbs for the deck light
function, and there are a LOT of MR16 LED bulbs on the internet. The
deck light piece does not require regulatory approval, so I could pick
what I wanted. I found a 60 degree beam, warm white LED MR16 flood on
Ebay, and it illuminates from the mast to beyond the anchor roller,
bathing everything in a nice warm light. It also protrudes from the
mast a lot less than the stock fixture, making less of a snag risk.

I'm almost embarassed to say that I'm about to add underwater lights
to the boat, to amuse my wife and our dog. I selected the Aqualuma "6
series" in blue, for which they are making custom lens inserts to
better direct the light "aftward" instead of down, due to the mounting
angle. They'll be installed in about 3 weeks, so I'll hopefully post
pictures in about a month. David - what brand of underwater lights
did you install?

Mark:

As for Waterfront and her underwater lights... They are great, and
worth the worry of coring yet a few more holes.
I went with the DR LED Neptune versions, that are very low power
consumption about 1.4 amps for two lights.
I placed them about 53 inches apart, about 22" - 24 " back from the
stern transom. I could measure for exact location if you wish. Three
would have been nice, but I'm not sure where one would locate them in
an even formation.

I mounted a BlueSea fused switch box at my engine control panel in the
cockpit. This controls the underwater lights, and the lights in the
aft lazarettes, and looks like the factory installed it.

By the way, I do get growth on these, and clean them throughout the
season. Not sure why, but have tried a newer aluminium bottom paint
for this season.
