Well, We've moved Liquidity to its home on a helix mooring on the
Potomac river and have discovered a number of things we need to
address (the constant evolution of Sailing). If there's interest, I can
also post on Helix Mooring as I am quickly becoming a BIG FAN. I also
have to say I am VERY happy with the Arch we installed this winter and
the ShipModul Multiplexer is up and running with my Mac laptop
(running macENC for those who care) some pics will follow.

My questions for the group though - We need MUCH better comms between
the Bow and the Cockpit for Anchoring, Mooring pickup and Docking. I
do not have the voice (nor the inclination) to yell to or from the
foredeck and lets face it- doing so doesn't make you popular with the
crew :) What I need is a great headset/Voice activated where I can
have a two way conversation with Crew standing a mere 50 ft away. We
already have VHF on board so it seems silly to introduce another band
(like FRS, or 2.4Ghz) but frankly, I just need clear comms with out
making everyone look like Borg.

On our delivery/move we discovered that - when its really blowing 30
plus, and you are plowing through 6-10ft seas, you can't hear much of
the radio on deck AT ALL. If we had needed it, the only way to have a
coherent conversation would have been a headset, or below. Period.

Anyone have ideas that work, or things that don't.

Many Thanks for all the wisdom shared here;)

Hi Sean,

Anchoring we use hand signals... docking we most always stern in starboard side tie, makes it easier because of engine and bow thruster controls location.
Once you have the stern line on your golden.

Jim

Sean:

I'm with Jim. We only use hand signals, as the batteries never die,
and with two, you have redundancy....

Like Jim, we favor stb docking because of throttle control.

I am entertaining the idea of twin electronic controls. Has anyone
done this yet? I figure if it works for power boats, that don't have
a sail for back up, it must be proven enough for we poor sailors....

David

Hi, all

One thing my wife and I have evolved over the years (apart from sometimes using handheld uhf's for bow to stern comms, particularly at night) is backing up to swing moorings. I still find it difficult to place the bow accurately when picking up a swing mooring on a windy day (especially at night), so we sometimes back up to them. We have a long rope ready (attached at the bow and running to the stern) to ensnare the mooring from the aft boarding platform. It super easy, and once the end of the rope is through the mooring eye, we cleat it off and let the boat swing round. Usually the first gin is poured before the boat has swung back into wind.

Cheers

AJ

Hi AJ,

Yes we also found that worked very well... How's the boat performing
with all your mods?
Had Red Sheilla out for crew training two days ago, nice to have
spring back in the Northern Hemispere!

Take down drills, quick stop training.. the lads are looking good!
Ready for VicMaui.

Have a G&T for me.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi, Jim

All the mods seem pretty good so far - we've just installed a clothes washer (hence the genset), which we haven't tried yet (we're coming into winter here). We like the autonomy of watermakers/washers/gensets/extra tankage etc, since the cruising we do here in the South Pacific tends to be fairly isolated, so its nice to remain off the beaten track for many days at a time. We're a bit slower with all the extra stuff, but Hawkeye strictly (almost) a cruiser (we race a First 10R around the cans here in NZ)

We'll be shaking things down in June, sailing the boat up to Tonga for the season, so should be able to test all the systems thoroughly. and there may be a regatta we might enter while we're there, hard not to race when there are boats side by side, right?

Glad to hear you're doing the Vic Maui - we did that race back in (I think) 1990 on my father's boat (a Moody 44) and loved it. Great start point, great sailing, great destination (Lahaina yacht club difficult to leave!).

All the best

AJ

Good to hear Andrew, ... What model of washer did you put in?

It's a Eumenia Babynove micro washer (have a look at http://www.marvel.net.nz/details.php?product_id=83). We put it in the starboar aft cabin hanging locker (easier to plumb on that side). Made up for lost storage by building new cupboards on inner walls (against the cockpit) of both aft cabins.

Haven't tried it yet, but fingers crossed!

Cheers

Neat... Very similar to the Spendide model I looked at. I would be interested in the mods you made to your cupboards. When you get a chance could upload some pictures.
