Has anyone had any luck purchasing / ordering specific genealogy books that are sold in Portugal/Azores?
For example, I have been trying to get this book for months written by Professora Maria Norberta Amorim, but the bookstores where they are available are in Portugal, and they will not ship to the U.S.

Thank you
Diane

Hi Diane,
I think it's very expensive to ship to the U.S. If you know anyone going there this summer, maybe they can purchase it for you and once they get back to America, they can ship it to you and you can reimburse them.

Thanks Cheri, I don’t mind paying the higher shipping cost, but the bookstores flat out told me they won’t ship to the U.S., period. I didn’t even have the option.

I have no one that is going there, but I’ll see if there is another way, thanks.

Which book stores (locations) are they available? I can make no promises, but I know someone who will be traveling to Sao Miguel shortly. Maybe they will be able to help.

I had hoped that the book you wanted could just be downloaded from CITCEM or the Universidade do Minho, but it is not  on either list. I don’t know why all of the titles are not there.

I wonder if you contacted someone at CITCEM or at the Repositorium at the Universidade do Minho and asked them if they knew of another link from which the other books in the collection could be downloaded, they might be able to help. The link below is to a page at the University where you can give them feedback, but the page leading to this inform implies that it would be a place to ask for help too.

Here is information that might help others with the books that can be downloaded.

The most complete list of volumes I have found that can be downloaded is at the address below.

If you click on a book title in the list, a page opens up for that book, and there is a link on the left to download the title as a PDF.

I found the book for Santo Amaro at CITCEM a few years ago, but it is gone now.  Luckily, it does appear on the Universidade do Minho list at the top.

The Santo Amaro book is wonderful. Dr Amorim even sent someone out with a camera to take pictures of all the houses that still existed.  Unfortunately, my grandmother’s house was gone, but her grandfather’s house was shown.

The Santo Amaro book included compiled information from church sacramental books, but also from Róis de Confessados, and from economic records that showed the crops raised and the family income, and from passenger registers.

It mentioned that my great-grandfather was a shore whaler (which I knew, but it was nice to see extra confirmation) as well as a farmer. It also mentioned, which I did not know, that my grandmother’s family was actually living with her maternal grand-uncle and her grandmother in casa #74 on Rua da Igreja, Terra Alta. It also mentioned that the her oldest brother left home at age ten and that  another son left for the U.S. but came back a few years later, married a teenage girl, and immediately left again! I didn’t know either of those stories. I do know the rest of the teenage girl story, unfortunately.

I mention all of this just to let you know how valuable these books are on a personal level. I hope other people enjoy them too.

I’m having the same problem with getting honey from the Azores. They refuse to ship to the United States. And the Portuguese stores that I have found here are running out of everything that I want to try. 😩 Kim

I recently tried to purchase a book from an individual in Portugal... when he went to the post office in Portugal, they told him that due to the tariffs, all shipments to the US had been suspended indefinitely...

Did you already try Bookmaniacs for the Santa Luiza title?

They appear to have a copy and when you go to your "cart" it has an option that lets you enter your U.S. state to get a shipping estimate. They appear to take major US credit cards.

They sell both new and used Portuguese and English books.

Their "About Us" page says the following:

"Bookmaniacs offers second-hand books at affordable prices. Our offer is available on several digital platforms (Facebook, Instagram, OLX and Custo Justo).
We offer regular postage for any order over fifteen euros.

"Our website is updated daily with books of all genres.

"Due to our commitment to various social causes, we regularly allocate a portion of the profit from sales of books and markers to social and animal support institutions. On a monthly basis, we publish the institutions supported and the amounts involved on our social networks.

"The website is owned by Sérgio David Leça Camarinha.
Open bookshop at the Faculty of Letters of Porto."

Hi Diane,

I’m going to São Miguel at the end of May, I’m just going to be there for 2 days. I don’t mind bringing the book back if they sell the book in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel. Do you know if the book is for sale in São Miguel? Let me know.

Diane, where do live? I live in Rhode Island.
