Santa Maria Genealogy Help Fraider

Hello, I am seeking help and advice please. I am new to genealogy and we are trying to trace our great grandfathers family history.

Our family name is Fraider, and we believe our great grandfather Francesco Fraider was born in 1854 on Santa Maria Island. His father was Josef (Joseph), who we believe was born 1825, also on Santa Maria.

The spelling of our family name could have be changed.

Francesco arrived in New Zealand prior to 1877, we understand as a Sealer/whaler. This is all the information we have.

Any advice, direction or help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Mark,

Fraider is probably a corruption of Freitas. Francesco (Italian spelling) is spelled Francisco over there. Josef/Joseph is Jose over there.

I don't do New Zealand research but there are a couple of people here who do. Sorry I can't be of more help than the Portuguese spelling of names.

Thank you very much Cheri. I really appreciate this help. I did find the attach baptism document which caught my eye. It was in the birth year for Francisco, and on the right hand pageit mentioned the name Jose, but I cant understand much else on the page.

Mark,

You've attached baptisms for babies named Jose. One born to a Santos family and one born to a Figuerido family.
