Good morning, I’m still working on finding Manuel. I just came across another confession from 1909 #0015 . Maria da Conceicao is living alone, that her husband is in an asylum. So now I know that he is in the hospital. There is something written under the numbers of her address. Can anyone help me with that. Thanks

OK, she's here, #217 on the right page:

Vid. addit. I wonder that means? The ink color looks slightly different. That comment may have been added later.

I think it might be see additional note. I checked the last page of that book and it does list Gertrude’s and another daughter.

I think it says 2nd homem for Manuel da Costa; but the observation I cannot figure out; But since he was 79 years old, perhaps it has to do with retirement, not working;
For Maria da Conceica it says 2nd mulher, domestic; so they are both twice married.

I think the word is mendigo, (a beggar).

Apparently he went from marítimo (seaman) in 1891; then vendedor de peixe (fish seller) in 1900 and 1901; then by 1908 he was a mendigo (beggar), before becoming "no asilo" (in an asylum) in 1909 and 1910.

This sounds like a very tough life.  Hopefully things got better for his widow and daughters in Massachusetts.

Now that Bill says it, it does look like "mendigo." I learned a new word.

Geez, once Bill put Manuel's life in a timeline using his occupation...Wow! You can see Manuel's age and condition just wearing away on him. How terribly sad. Modern medicine would have helped him tremendously.

Bill l feel so sad for Manuel and his family. A beggar, are you sure that’s the word? Manuel and his family had a hard life. Manuel had one sister and his mother died when he was a baby. His father remarried . Manuel and his family moved so much, always on the move. When Maria da Conceicao and Gertudes came to America, they ended living with one of Gertudes sister’s. She then married my grandfather and had 6 children . Maria da Conceicao died in 1916. Gertudes died in 1947 of Tuberculosis. She was 58.  I may never know the exact death date of Manuel da Costa, but thanks to you and Cheri and the Azores group, I know a lot more than what I did.  Thank you and again I appreciate all everyone for their help.  Sincerely Pat

I left out the 1905 roll that showed him as "entrevado" (crippled) which is a transition from fish seller to beggar.

There was no political correctness in that era so calling his a beggar probably would have the same connotation as today.  He was no longer able to generate income so supported his family by handouts from friends and family or possibly by the kindness of others or by whatever he had to do.

Bill thank you much for seeing that in 1905. I missed it, and maybe that led to him going to the asylum hospital later on. He couldn’t work and had to ask others to help him , beg. Those records sure gave me so much more information than I ever thought I would get. Again I need to thank everyone that helped me.  God Bless you, Pat
