I have a baptismal entry which does not follow the standard format. I can see the child name as Abel and pick out words such a "abandmado" (abandoned), what I think is "Provacao, da Beira" and  “hospicio” which I understand may be a mental hospital . The godfather appears to be Vitorino Jose Caldeira(?), married to (?), I cannot read the name but looks like “(?) of this Matriz”. The godmother’s name looks like Maria do Rozario, single. I don’t understand  her family reference. I'm guessing that Abel was an abandoned child and his date if birth is unknown. Also what does the margin comment reflect? Any assistance in understanding the content would be appreciated. Tony

On 4 Feb 1883....Abel abandoned on the day referenced above at the door of Ignacia Rosa, single, spinner, living in Povoacao da Beira (probably the neighborhood) and she was the same that something or the other hospice.

Mental hospital is "hospital psiquiátrico" according to Google Translate.

Hospital is spelled the same way in both English and Portuguese.

A native speaker will have to get the rest. There's some nuances there that don't make sense with the literal translation.

Beira is the inland portion of the Vila of Velas located between the village center and the parish of Norte Grande.
I believe that word in question  is "hospicial" which roughly translates to "hospice".  In this context I am sure is is a hospital or health center of some sort and not the American meaning of hospice.  The record says the baby was left on at the door of Ignacia on the 3rd of the month and she brought him to the "Hospicial desta Vila das Velas" on the 4th of the same month.  The godfather is Vitorinho José Caldeira who is married and is the treasurer of the church.  HIs wife is not named. The godmother is Maria do Rosario, single, living in Velas in the household of her parents.

I forgot the margin note.  It says Abel was given to the same Ignacia Rosa mentioned in the record to be raised by her.

Hi,
the correct translation, not mentioned mental hospital....

Abel, exposed [abandoned by his mother]

He was given to be raised by Ignacia Roza, the same one mentioned in the record.
Vicar Penha.

On the fourth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and three, in this Parish Church of São Jorge, Municipality of Vilas, Diocese of Angola, I solemnly baptized a male individual, to whom I gave the name of Abel, and who had been abandoned on the night of the third day of the said month, at the door of Ignacia Roza, single, spinner, resident in the village of Beira, of this same parish, and delivered by herself to the Hospital of this village of Velas, on the fourth day of the said month.

The godfather was Victorino Jose Caldeira, married, Parish of this Main Church, and the godmother was Maria do Rosario, single, daughter of the family, resident in this village, both of whom I know to be prosperous. And for the record, I have drawn up this record in duplicate, which after being read and checked in the presence of the godparents, I signed with myself, not doing this one because I do not know how to write. That was the above.

Vitorino José Caldeira.

G'day Leni

Very much appreciate the very detailed explanation. Thank you. Also, sorry I haven't responded before now but had been "distracted" by other events. Kindest regards Tony
