I am currently helping my step-daughter trace her family.

She is the granddaughter of Mary Lorraine Teves (1944-2003) of California

Through census records, I was able to validate Mary's parents as
George David Teves (1915-1987) of San Jose California and
Mary Lorraine Lenos (1916-1997) or Milpitas California.

Through census records, I was able to validate George's parents as
Manuel Louis Teves Jr. (1885-1954) born in the Kingdom of Hawai'i on Oahu and
Emily M Botehlo (born 1891 or 1892 and passed before 1954)

Through census records, I was able to validate Mary's parent as
Antone Jacinto Lenos (1877-1945) born in Ponto Garcia, Portugal, passed in California and
Virginia R Rabello (abt 1895 - abt 1950)

This is where is stalls for Manuel Jr. (1885-1954), I have one census that gives the correct birth year and the father's name of Manuel Teves (born 1863) and his wife Carvina (which is more the handwriting so maybe Carolina). both showing birth in Portugal BUT without confirmation, I'm not sure where.

Everything else is just possibilities

Appreciate any assistance

Kari

Kari,

I think "Lenos" is really Lemos. "Lenos" isn't a Portuguese surname.

Antone Jacinto Lenos will be Antonio Jacintho Lemos over there. You'll be researching Ponta Garca. "A"s on the ends of both words. However, unless Antonio married in Ponta Garca, you're going to have a hard time finding his baptism because Antonio is pretty common and Ponta Garca is relatively large over there.

"Passport Registrations: Portuguese Immigrants from Azores to Sandwich Isles 1879-1883" by Bob De Mello does list this on page 410:
Manuel Teves, 25 years old, son of Jose de Teves and Maria do Espirito Santo from Ginetes
Wife Carolina de Jesus, 27 years
Children: Maria 3; Manuel 4; Jose 18 months
On the Monarch (left May 6, 1882 and arrived July 2, 1882)

Before you get too excited, Manuel Teves, age 25 in 1882 would be born c. 1857, not 1863. Also, the book is not complete. The records after 1883 are lost. Also, they already have a Manuel age 4. He'll need to die and your would be born 1885. You'll have to research the Kingdom of Hawaii records. They have some differences in records due to being a kingdom. You can ask on the Portuguese Hawaiian Genealogy research group here:

When I saw the surname Lenos, I thought of my cousin's husband who is Portuguese.  I will double check to see if his father is indeed Portuguese as his surname is "Leanues" which sounds French, but is pronounced like "Linas" which google says isn't Portuguese either.  My grandfather's surname was Leite so I've seen it written in the states in various ways...one was Lewis!

One of my ancestors was a Correia. I've seen "Arcirso" and "Coricesc!" I think the worst surname that gets butchered in America must be Teixeira. The vowels and the Portuguese pronunciation of "x" really throws the Americans (and Hawaiians) recording the name.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-3JSQ-1T?view=index&cc=1861144&lang=en.  You may need to register a free account to view this link.  The record at this link shows Antone Jacinto Lenos was born 22 Jun 1877 in the Azores and his wife's name is "Virgie" (short for Virginia).

According to the Social Security Numerical files (also on FamilySearch.org) his father's name is Antonio J. Linhares and he was born in Ponta Garça. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6K4Q-1XK7?lang=en

With that being the case, this is likely his baptism (#70) though I think the birthdate is 22 July instead of 22 June like USA records indicate: https://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-VF-PONTAGARCA-B-1870-1880/SMG-VF-PONTAGARCA-B-1870-1880_item1/index.html?page=380

Antonio, born on 22 July 1877 and baptized on 1 August at Igreja Nossa Senhora da Piedade, Ponta Garça
Father: Antonio Linhares, worker, native of Apostle S. Paulo, in Ribeira Quente, Povoação
Mother: Maria Jacinta, domestic, native of this parish (Ponta Garça) where they are residents of Ribeira Garcia.  They married in Ribeira Quente.
Paternal Grandparents: Antonio Jacinto Vieira and and Liduvina (Ludivina) Jacinta
Maternal Grandparents: Felisberto Ferreira and Maria de Jesus
Godparents: Antonio Pedro, married, worker; and Ana da Conceição, married.

The Ponta Garça location agrees with you stated (Ponta not Ponto)

I hope this helps you get started.

"Lenos" makes some sense with the Portuguese pronunciation of "Linhares."

I'm related to Ludivina Jacinta who m.  Antonio Jacinto Vieira. Her greats are my direct ancestors.

I’m not familiar either “Lenos”, but I do know the surname Lemos…is there a connection?

MaryAnn,
In this case "Lenos" is a corruption of "Linhares." So no connection.
