Hello,

I'm confused by two words that follow the name of the decedent in the second-to-last entry on the left page, the one for Domingos Goncalves.  The death took place during the large mortality event of 1704-1705, in case that matters.

Thanks!

This is what I think it says...

Fran.ca
Em os ditos sete dias do mes de Novembro de mil e sete centos e quatro faleceo Fran.ca filha familias de Joseph Borges recebeu todos os sacramentos não fez testamento...

Translated to English...

Fran.ca
On the said seventh day of the month of November in the year 1704, Francisca, filha famílias of Joseph Borges, died; she received all the sacraments and did not make a will...

I'm sure that there are others here who can explain the phrase "filha familias de..." better than I can. In essence, the term forms part of the legal/canonical vocabulary of the period. It's intended to capture the state of paternal power over the deceased (in this case).

Hope that helps,
George

George,

Thanks so much, but maybe I shouldn't have counted that last mini-record on that page.  The record I'm looking at is the next one; it involves Domingos Goncalves, and the two words after his name look something like "jural decer(os)" -- in fact, the "j" might be part of the Glz abbreviation for Goncalves.

Thanks,

Don

Oh... now I see the record that you are referring to...

To me it appears to be "jurado de verdade" or "jurado de verdadeiro"... as in sworn to be true. Of course it can also be something entirely different.

Thanks, George.  I didn't recognize it as boilerplate -- so I appreciate your help!
