A Photo

I know this isn't exactly genealogy but maybe someone on the list is
related to the Silveira line.

We've been going through boxes of photos and slides from my
brother-in-law's estate.  Attached is a photo we found from his NASA
collection.  In the photo, my brother-in-law Kirby Hinson is on the
right.  In the center is Milt Silveira.  They both worked together for
NASA from it's beginnings.  Milton Antone Silveira was of Portuguese
descent and a native of Massachusetts.  His parents were Azorean
immigrants.  Both Milt and Kirby were interested in planes from
childhood.  Milt had his pilots license at the age of 16.  It's rare we
hear about someone who is Portuguese and their achievements.  Both Milt
and Kirby had an outstanding career with NASA working on all the space
projects from Gemini through Space Station.  The event where this was
taken was the July 20, 1989, 20th Anniversary Splashdown Party of Apollo
11 held on the grounds of the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

During my time at the Johnson Space Center, I never thought about asking
Mr. Silveira if was Portuguese!  We were most likely the only two of
Azorean descent living in the area!  Often, all of us working at NASA
were so busy in our specialized areas, that we didn't think about our
ethnic heritage or asking one another where we grew up! It's sad today
to think most of us there learned more about a person from their
obituary than our interaction with them during our work life.  As Milt
was also a gourmet chef, I might have found he had a great recipe for
papa secos had I thought to ask!
