Jan,
Ernesto do Canto did a whole lot of marriage indices for the freguesias he was interested and only for what he considered important families (probably to him). Here's a page of one of his indices from Achada:
His penmanship is the main, thinner writing. The thicker writing is that of Rodrigo Rodrigues who went through and added more stuff or was just a 2nd set of eyes, trying to figure out what Canto couldn't. Canto did a few baptisms and deaths, but not a whole lot. I don't think it will help you find a priest. For Nordeste, he did only marriages (priests don't marry) and it's about 100 pages, covering 1583-1850.
Rodrigo Rodrigues is a 6 volume set of books. I'm sure there are Machado families in it. It's NOT a comprehensive genealogy of S. Miguel and S. Maria. Again, selected families or what were the prominent families of the time. I did not see a
Jacinto Felix Machado listed in RR. Makes sense, as priests generally don't have kids.
Your best bet is to email Joao Ventura. He is an archivist and on this list. He works in the archives in Angra. For a fee, he can look for the "De Genere" papers that a man had to fill out to become a priest. They were to do a 4 generation pedigree chart (if memory serves me correctly). Contact him for the particulars. His email is heroi99 at
yahoo.com.
Good luck!
