Hello, I am new to the group. I have a couple of questions and hope
someone may be able to help.

My paternal Grandfather (Manuel Jose Caramujo) aka (Manuel Joseph). I
have his birth/baptism record from the Azores. It is in Portuguese
but was able to translate some of it into english. At the village of
Santissima Truidade of municipality in the year 1885 existing on pages
112 under the following text: Item number 74

Manuel son of Manuel Jose and Francisca de Jesus. On the 10th of Dec
1895 in church of Santissima Truidade, Villa of the Municpality of
Lajes do Pico, Diocese of Augra. an individual of the male sex was
baptized and given the name Manuel. born in this parish on 29th day of
Nov of the same year. Legimate son of Manuel Jose, Mariner & Francisca
de Jesus, domestic profession. Paternal gparents: Antonio Jose & Luiza
de Brum. Maternal gparents: Martiniano de Brum & Francesca de Jesus.
Question: On his naturalization certificate he had his name changed
from: Manuel Jose Caramujo to Manuel Joseph. Where did the Caramujo
come from? I could not see any reference in the names that who suggest
anyones last name was Caramujo. I did not get the second page of the
Birth Cert. translated as it is really light in color. So don't know
what it says.

Any help appreciated Thank you, Vivian (Silva) Christy

Vivian,

It may be a corruption of another surname or perhaps a nickname that he acquired.

Cheri,  Thanks for the info.  I do remember my father telling me that Manuel was from the Caramujo side of the Island of Pico.  What ever that means.  So maybe it was a nickname he go stuck with?  Thanks, Vivian

Vivian,

The Caramujo is probably an " alcunha" a nickname. It means "snail" in Portuguese. These were used identify the many Manuels, Joses, Antonios, and Marias in an area where there were few surnames to tell them apart.

On the University of Minho site for Pico http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/ilhadopico.html
I found the following in the concelho of Lajes:

Manuel José Flória

Nascido a 11 de Dezembro de -1861

Falecido a 18 de Julho de -1942

Pais

António José Mateus Flória -1838--1909

Luisa de Brum -1839--1915

Casamentos e filhos

Casado a 15 de Agosto de -1938 com Maria de Lurdes -1892

Casado a 28 de Janeiro de -1883 com Francisca de Jesus -1861--1937,

 tiveram

José de Brum Martiniano -1889

Manuel ? -1885

Manuel ? -1884--1884

This Manuel Jose Floria is his father, and his first wife Francisca de Jesus his mother. The record of your grandfather was not recorded there. You'll notice the two Manuels listed, it seemed a common practice that if a child died young, the parents would use the name on future children. My ancestors on Flores have three baptisms for Jose, and all died young.

If you go to the site above and search around, you'll find that Francisca de Jesus's parents are in fact Martiano de Brum and Francisca de Jesus. You should be able to build quite a family tree from there.

My ggg grandfather Jose Silveira Soares was also from Lajes das Pico. I have some very distant Brum relatives.

The Portuguese/English dictionary I have says:  "caramujo: periwinkle; variety of cabbage; figurehead; introvert, eccentric."  Caramujo may have been a nickname that was given to him or one of his ancestors.  Celeste, Hayward, CA

Vivian,

My parents were both born in Lajes do Pico -- Caramujo is an " alcunha" but I asked my mom if she remembers an area by that name.  She said that there is an area near Madalena that is known as "O Caramujo".

Your paternal great grandfather Antonio Jose Mateus Floria (1838 - 1909) and my paternal great grandmother Maria Sao Jose (1837-1897) were first cousins.

Plus ...

Your grandfather Manuel Jose Florio (November 29, 1885 - ?) was my maternal  grandfather's 4th cousin.

I got this info from the Minho site.

Wow ... nice to find some realtives.  Does your family live in the U.S.?

Hi Eric,  Thank you so much.  That is my gfathers family all the names match and I remember someone saying my gfather had a brother who lived in Pico.  He used to go visit him when I was real young.  This is so exciting for me I can't thank you enough.  I have had such a hard time finding any of my relatives in the U.S.  I thought it would take years.  I remember my Father used to tease my gfather and say he came from the Caramujo side of the Island and I really did not know what that meant.  I only learned the bad words in portuguese when I was growing up and my father never told me what that word meant.  Thank you again.  Vivian

Hi Liz,

It is great to know I have more relatives out there and I am really excited.  Yes we live in the U.S.  I live in San Diego, Ca., We moved to an area called Poway, Ca. which is still in San Diego County, about 2 yrs ago.  It is a lot hotter out here then closer to the coast where we used to live.  I have cousins that live in San Diego County and some I know of from that side of the family that live in Modesto, & Oakland, Ca.  Its nice to know you have more relatives.  Do you live in the Azores?

Vivian,

I am glad you got my email response -  it kept bouncing back.

I actually live in Canada.  I have maternal aunts and uncles that live in California (San Jose, Santa Clara and San Leandro).   I also have paternal and maternal aunts that live in Pico.

My mom has cousins or second cousins that live in San Diego.

Were you able to search your ggrandmother on the site?

All the best.

Thanks ... Liz

Hi Liz,

I sent you an email but have not received a response back and thought you may not have received it as it was a long one?  Let me know as I sent it to your personal email not the group.   Thanks, Vivian (Silva) Christy
