Hi all,

I am looking for any further details on:

Catarina de Oliveira (de Matos) married to Andre Furtado, as my search has stopped there.  I have been directed to the book below.  Hoping someone in the group may have a copy of this book and can let me know if there is anything further for this couple?

Luís Rodrigues - Famílias do Vale das Furnas Livº III, pág. 1802

Much appreciated, Ana

Are you sure they are connected to Furnas?

I have an André Furtado marrying Catarina Oliveira in Sao Pedro, Vila França do Campo. André is a widow and his 1st wife was Catarina de Matos. André and Catarina O. are natives of São Pedro, VFdC.

This is what I have. There are literally a lot of moving parts here which makes it difficult to follow. Hope this helps.

André Furtado & Catarina de Oliveira had a son, João Furtado (aka Pavao), who married Maria de Jesus in Ponta Garça, but she was from Furnas.

NOTE: Joao Furtado is baptized and marries in Ponta Garca but is a native of Ribeira Quente. Both records refer to Ribeira Quente.

For some reason the link to the above marriage record is incorrect.  Here is a working link:

I decided to check the names I have and have the same couple as well.  I've been monitoring posts but have not had time for genealogy as my husband had surgery, his brother passed away and I was ill in February & March.  Trying to catch up with things now.  I'll go back and reread the previous posts.

I found a couple of children of Joao Furtado & Maria de Jesus in Ribeira Quente.

There are a few discrepancies, but I’m reasonably confident these are the same individuals.  Both records state that Joao Furtado is a native of Ponta Garca and not Ribeira Quente. But he clearly has a connection to Ribeira Quente if he’s living and having children there. However, Joaquim’s baptism record states that his mother is native of Maia and does not name grandparents. Antonia’s baptism record states her mother is native of Furnas and does name the grandparents.

1. Baptism: Joaquim son of Joao Furtado Pavao & Maria de Jesus

2. Baptism: Antonia daughter of Joao Furtado & Maria de Jesus (paternal of Andre Furtado & Catarina de Oliveira / maternal of Joao Martins & Joana Maria)

Hope this helps a little further.

Ana B,

Andre Furtado married twice. (He is my 6 great).

Marriage 1) Catharina de Mattos on 14 Dec 1725 in the Sao Pedro church of Vila Franca. They had 10 kids and she died on 5 Mar 1744 in the Sao Pedro church of Vila Franca (3 days after the birth of her last child).

Marriage 2) Catharina de Oliveira on 21 Sep 1744 or 1748 (old note - not sure what I meant by that, but it was hard to read. I'm guessing it was 1744 as their first kid is born in 1746). Again, in the Sao Pedro church of Vila Franca. They also had 10 kids. I descend from this Catarina.

So the names of the 2 wives are being blended together into one woman (with 20 kids)!!! He had 2 wives with 2 marriage dates, and 10 kids per wife.

Andre Furtado is the son of Manuel Furtado and Catarina do Couto. I have no further research.

Wife 1, Catarina de Matos - She is the daughter of Agostinho da Costa and Dorothea Rodrigues. I have no further info (she is not my ancestress).

Wife 2, Catarina de Oliveira - She is the daughter of Jose de Oliveira and Josefa de Jesus and there's many more generations back on them.

Hope this helps.

Hi Cheri,

Wow thank you so much,  you just made my day, you validated my research today going page by page of records.

I am looking for my 6th greats out of the 20 kids then; one of Andre's sons Francisco Furtado any chance of a birth day/location? He married Rosa Maria Barbosa from Ponta Garca Feb 22 1775.

thanks, Ana B

Sorry, I only have the same marriage date you do to Rosa Maria Barboza on 22 Feb 1775. No birth on him. Or his brother Andre.

We do know that he had a brother born 31 May 1852 and baptized on June 5th supposedly in Ponta Garca. It could be Ribeira Quente too. My research is blended with Shirley Allegre (now deceased) and she did her research her way and sometimes PG is RQ.  At any rate, this baptism of a boy child could be Francisco or Andre, or another male. We just don't know.

No worries, I will go back at it tomorrow and try Ponta Garca & Ribeira Quente.

I have Shirley Cambra Allegre's research as well.   In what she shared with me, she shows Joao Furtado born Sept 11, 1756 in Villa do Franco.  Since no birth certificates at that time, I'm not sure how she arrived at that date.  She shows him christened in Ponta Garca as well.

However, running my relationship calculator, I am not related to Andre Furtado!  I am a 5th cousin to Shirley on my Pimentel line.  Our common ancestors are Jose de Pimentel and and Antonia da Trindade Furtada Fagundes.  Pimentel is my grandmother's side.  But my grandfather was James Furtado Leite, so I have Furtado ancestors as well.

Shirley always used the "Christening" label even though it was a Catholic baptism! I'm sure there was a baptism label in her program, but Shirley liked using the christening label :)

I now remember what Shirley was doing. "Born" in Vila Franca and "Baptized" in Ponta Garca means that the couple were residing in Vila Franca (maybe) and took the baby to Ponta Garca for baptism. In this case, Shirley erred, as the parents were natives of VF but lived in PG.

The baptism is here, bottom left. I'm not sure if he was born on the 11th or the 13th. It's a little hard to read there:

Donna, I have  Jose de Pimentel and and Antonia da Trindade FF too. I'll email you off list as I don't have you in my program.
