Is there anyone who may be able to help me decipher some entries in
the Machado genealogy? I think I am seeing a possible connection to my
family, but it is very hard to read, and I am not clear on the format.
Also, I don't read portuguese and am not sure which dates I'm looking
at always. does c. before a date mean dob?
thanks.

Hello Suzanne,

The c before a date usually means Christening.

Suzanne,

c. date could also be the marriage date (c. = casado).

The Carlos Machado genealogies have already been deciphered and are available in Gedcom format.  I don't know the cost.  You make a check out to Fr. Joe Viveiros in Swansea, MA.  Contact George Pacheco to get Fr. Joe's address and to find out the cost.  George is on this list or can be reached directly at bretanha1954 at yahoo dot com.

For those wondering about the Carlos Machado genealogies, they cover Sao Miguel island and some Santa Maria.

Suzanne:

Besides the "c." date possibly meaning the marriage date, I have also seen it used as "circa," (c. or ca.) meaning "around" or an "approximate" date.

Cheers, Duane

In the Portuguese manuscript c before a date means Casado, i.e. married.

thanks to everyone who responded to my question about the Machado
genealogy. I have the name and contact information for the person who
can send me the gedcom for the genealogy, so that is going to be my
next step. I hope I can make this connection !!
