translation help

Greetings Group,
 
I noticed a baptismal record that stands out because of its differences.......could someone clarify it for me?
 
 
On the CCA site for Sao Jorge for the Topo baptisms.......1828.....page 235....the second one.....what does it say? Near the end of it it looks like the word "exorcismos" in  "ritual do paulo"?
It stars out differently also.....rather than the name of the child it appears to say "human child"? of the masculine sex.......I'm just not sure what I'm seeing and all help would be appreciated!

So it says;

 

"A child of the masculine gender, son of Manuel de Sousa de Azevedo and of his wife Maria da Silveira, grandson (by his father side) of Manuel de Sousa of Saint Peter (it's a place in Topo) and his wife, Maria de Azevedo. (And By his mother side) Manuel Brazil and His wife Isabel Silveira from the freguesia and the Church of our Lady of The rosary of Vila Nova de Topo, Island of saint George. Born in March, and baptized a 4 de April of the year of 1839 (is this right?) in his house by need (because the child was ill, therefore it was needed to be baptized at home for emergency) and because the child died witauth being given The Exorcisms according to the (Episcopal) law of the Pope Paul V."

 

 

So, I am guessing that the child died, without being baptized, so there is no name in the beginning.

 

 The child probably got seriously ill, and the priest was called to give the baptism and give the last sacraments to a child, but died without being christened. Therefore, he coul not proceeds to obey the rules of The church, rules stipulate by The Pope Paul V.

Hi Yolanda and thank you so much for translating the record so quickly for me. I noticed several of these types of records all right around the same time to different families. I wonder if there was a reason for more infant stillborns and mortality due to something that was happening on the island that year? It was 1839 and there is a cluster of these "en casa" baptisms. I become curious when I see something out of the norm......I always wonder what it means and why it occurred!
 
Yolanda, what does the word "huma" mean? I appreciate your ability to help....my Portuguese leaves much to be desired!

Your question is a very good one; it could mean a disease, an epidemic, around this time. But it is quite normal the high child mortality in this period. Did you have a chance to check out the records of death in this time? And see I f there is more than one death by "Household"? And if could see the ratio of the age of these women, that loose the children. These could be clues to finding the answer. For example, the mothers could be awfully young.

 

Huma – Means one, but, the word lost the H, and Know a days its spelles uma.  

 

We use it when he refers to a number of things, in the feminine.

 

Criança (the word is feminine) uma

Um  (autocarro)  the word (bus) is masculine

Sometimes, if you go back record by record, the priest may (or may not) note that the following deaths were being recorded due to ____.  I saw that once for an earthquake (terremoto).

Huma is the the old spelling for uma (feminine form of the word 1).

Thanks Cheri for the info regarding Huma.......regarding the cluster of infant deaths I didn't see any indication of the reason....perhaps 1838/1839 had something going on that contributed to the higher incidence.......reading these baptismal records is indeed insightful......I think my favorite thing has been the one person who gave so much documentation about the exposta/exposto children found.....the clothing details which I haven't seen during any of the other recorded time periods that I've researched thus far.....

I noticed another very unusual record in the baptisms for Topo. It looks like a mass baptism for several children at once. I'm just not fluent enough to know what I'm reading with certainty! Would you have a look at it?
 
CCA....Topo... baptisms...1828...page # 126 over onto page 127
 
Regarding what you suggested for the high infant mortality for certain times it could be disease or perhaps another factor. I have had an idea that it would be interesting to somehow have a database for each year with the unusual births recorded....Not sure why though.
