I just wanted to throw this out again for anyone who might have
ancestors who lived in San Gregorio CA (on the coast, south of Half
Moon Bay--which is south of San Francisco, for those of you outside the
area).

I have school records for various years from the 1890s to 1910s and a
few more recent. The one-room school closed in the 1950s. There was a
large population of Azoreans here. Or maybe a small population with
lots of kids! My grandmother attended this school.

The records consist of the names of the children, usually their
parent's or just the father's name, sometimes what he did for a living.
The ages of the children are given as well as their attendance records.

It has been in my mind to sometime in the future put some of this info
online, but so far that hasn't happened. If you have the name of the
family and the time frame I would be happy to see what I can find. (As
always, this is not a commercial venture!)

You can visit the school website at <http://seasideschool.org>

I have some school pictures there with the students identified.

Interesting, Mary. My grandmother met my grandfather
on a ranch in San Gregorio, CA. It was the Machado
Ranch and many Portuguese immigrants worked there in
the early 1900's. My grandfather, Joao Bernard Sobral,
from Tras-os-Montes on the Continent of Portugal was
there and so was my grandmother's father, Joao
Ferreira Dinis, from Terceira. When my grandmother,
Maria Jose Ferreira Dinis went to be with her father
(she was 17 years old), she met my grandfather and
they were married within 6 months.

The Machado family had 5 or 6 kids and they probably
attended the school you mention. I have a picture of
my grandparents and the Machado family taken in front
of the Machado barn on the day my grandparents
married. I do not know the names of the children,
however. Celeste, Hayward, CA

Nice story Celeste! There are some of the Machado boys in the pictures
on the school website. Some of the family lives in the area still,
though the ranch was sold quite a few years ago. We used to buy our
oats from John Machado, one of the sons.

Did any of your Dinis family stay in the area? Some of the children
pictured
<http://www.seasideschool.org/history/1925.html>
are from the Deniz family (Frank, Mary and Erma). Frank's family still
has property south of Half Moon Bay.

It is interesting to know that your grandfather was working in the area
and from the continent, not the Azores!

I think the Mary Deniz in the picture was married to my husbands cousin Joseph Valadao Garcia. I do know that Mary had a brother Frank and a sister who lives here in Fremont.  They were raised on a ranch in San Gregoria.  I'm going to call her tomorrow to find out for sure.  Mary lives in Half Moon Bay, where she has lived since she was first married.

Hi Mary,
I do not think any of this Dinis family stayed in
that area. There was a nephew of my great-grandfather
also working on the Machado rancch at the same time;
however, I think he moved around a bit. He has a
daughter that lives in Porto Judeu (in the same house
where my grandmother lived) and I think he has a son
that lives in San Jose. I think his name was Frank
Santos, I met him once; however, did not maintain
contact.
The story I have for my grandfather from the
continent is that he came by train to CA and went to
Pinole. When I questioned that bit of information, I
was told that there was a "jobber" in Pinole that knew
where work was available to immigrants and that is how
he ended up in San Gregorio.
I never heard how my grandmother's father got to
Sao Gregorio, I think word of mouth and networking was
how many immigrants found work once they arrived in
CA.
A few years ago, I found the entrance to the
Machado Ranch, now Toto Ranch by the sign at the gate.
I wrote to the address and received no response. I
spoke to someone who was entering the locked gate the
day I was there and I was told that all the old
buildings no longer existed and no one was allowed on
the property. I pretty much gave up trying to get
some pictures of the place where my grandparents met.

Hi Helen,
I do not know if the Mary Deniz you mention is
connected to my grandmother's Ferreira Dinis family.
I think I remember that my mother knew a lady that
lived in San Jose who was the widow of the last
surviving Machado son from the Machado ranch. I think
she has died and I never followed up on what she knew
other that she told my mother that her husband used to
say he remembered my grandmother and grandfather
Sobral flirting at the dinner table; using a mirror
that was on the kitchen wall.

He was a young boy and found the eye contact via the
mirror interesting! Celeste, Hayward, CA

I just talked to Joe's cousin Mary, and she is defintently the girl in the picture along with her brother Frank and sister Erma.  Her Family didn't work on the Machado Ranch. but had a dairy in San Gregoria. She said she remembers another Deniz family but as far as she knows she was not related to them. Maybe it was your family.

That's sweet!

The tales of love from San Gregorio! IN 1910 my sixteen year old
Irish/German grandfather came to San Gregorio to work for his uncle who
was managing a dairy right across from the store in "downtown" San
Gregorio. The uncle had four daughters. My Portuguese grandmother was
best friends with the eldest, so she was at their home quite a bit
since she lived nearby. Something clicked between her and the hired
boy.

My grandfather had to go back home to Monterey county and they
corresponded for a couple of years before he moved back to San Gregorio
to farm and eventually marry the Portuguese girl. I have the letters
that my grandfather wrote, saved in a wallpaper covered box by my
grandmother. They start out very formally and never do get into
anything very risque. I treasure them!

Celeste--

I think I have some pictures of the old buildings taken before it was
sold--probably the last year that we bought our oats from John Machado.
That would have been early 1970s. I will try to find them and make
copies to send you.

I'm not sure if I have a picture of the house, but i know i took
pictures of the barns and outbuildings. Thinking back, I must have
known that there were big changes on the way and wanted to document one
of the old ranches. At that time I wasn't thinking of genealogy!

I believe John's widow still lives in Half Moon Bay. At least one of
their sons is also in the area.

Hi Mary,
You are so lucky to have letters to go along with
the oral history. Unfortunately, neither my
grandmother nor my grandfather could read or write.
They only had oral communiation and the eye contact in
the mirror. Celeste

Mary,
I am very much interested in any pictures you may
have of the old Machado ranch. I guess the John
Machado you mention is one of the sons or the original
Machado family that was living on the ranch in 1915.
That is the year my grandparents married and the
picture I have barely shows a barn in the background
with the group lined up in front of it.
I have tried to attach the photo here;however, I
have a new scanner and I can't figure out how to get
the scanned picture into the email??? I have to wait
until one of the "computer people" in the family is
here to show me how to do that. Celeste, Hayward,
