Mine are Furtado de Mendonças from the Azores that went to California. Paternal line goes up to the Afonso Furtado de Mendonça cluster then it becomes very mysterious and hard to track a few more generations backward. The legend that some genealogists bicker over is that the Furtado
de Mendonças of Azores came from an illegitimate son that queen Urraca had. Afonso's paternal line goes to Fortún Garcés of Pamplona.
Both are very hard to confirm definitively once you get to the Spain border crossing, around Rui Furtado De Mendonça. They were definitely trying to hide something, whether it be Urrica's relation or something else.
I have spent an absurd amount of hours trying to get information to solve this definitively, but bits and pieces of semi-informed speculation is the best I could get.
Also, does anyone know what the S.S. means on their coat of arms and other photos?
