In reading this record at first glance it looked like Costa but now looking more closely I am seeing Certo or Cento. Either name is not listed in Guill in the list of Surnames. I need a second set of eyes to take a look and if you have seen the name before that would be interesting.   It is the birth record for Anna on page 45 CCA image number 0047       https://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-RIBEIRINHA-B-1842-1847/SMG-RG-RIBEIRINHA-B-1842-1847_item1/index.html?page=47

It definitely look like Certo to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is actually an alcunha/nickname that got passed down that was attached to a common surname for the area.  It translates to right/correct.

Good call Rick and Linda.  Certo is correct (and not just in translation).

I believe this is the parents' marriage: https://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-C-1812-1828/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-C-1812-1828_item1/index.html?page=199 (right side)

Thanks Linda & Bill,   I found another birth record and that one used his full name Francisco de Sousa Certo. Translated Certo is used loosely for related meaning as certain or sure.
