Obrigada !

These look somewhat familiar. You should ask Cheri Melo as these appear to be realtions of her ancestors or those of Shirlaey Allegre.

I have these-

7-Feb-1876
Jose de Melo, age 22, 'camponeo,' son of Jose de Melo & Jacinta Julia, m. to Jacinta de Jesus, age 19, with premission of her maternal grandfather in the absence of her parents who were in the Empire of Brazil, daughter of Jose d'Arruda & Maria da Conceicao.
Test.: Francisco de Melo Barboza & Manuel Joaquim, 'camponeos.'
Off.: Father Antonio Jacinto de Melo.

I could not find baptism of Joao [de Mello Barboza in Ribeira Quente on the date mentioned, July 27 1884.

Yes Bill is right. I got thrown by the first date whicg was bapotismal date. Here it is

baptism record no 29, page 41 verso de Sao Paulo de Ribeira Quente parochial

Joao, born 27 July 1884 as onze horas de noite , bap- Aug 10 1884, filho de Joze de Mello Coelho filho de Joze de Mello Coelho maritimo and Jacintha de Jesus domestica naturaes e recebidos e moradores nesta freguesia; Pat- Joao de Mello Barboza and Jacintha de Jesus and materno de Joze de Arruda and Maria da Conceicao; Pad- Jose Junipero d' Amaral cazado maritimo and madrinha Anna Emilia da Silva.

You can see what I wrongly read all those years ago was Calhao, but is in fact Coelho.

You really should contact Cherry Melllo.

I'm working on it. I had some triplicates in my database on this line and it's a mess. I'm fixing it. They are related to me.

JR,

On the 7 Feb 1876 marriage of Jose de Mello and Jacinta Julia who needed permission to marry, I'm reading maternal grandmother (avó). Avô (with the hat) is grandfather. And it would be avó materna for grandmother and avô materno for grandfather, correct? Because if the guy was careless with diacritics I could go off of the adjective. Or is it too early in the morning for me to think?
Thanks, Cheri

You are crrect. However my wife says that spelling is quite formal and they used to refer them with V's. Va vó  and Va vô.

That 'informal' way is how we used to address our grandparents as well.  I've seen grandmother as both Va-Vó and Vo-Vó and grandfather as Vo-Vô.  But when my cousins and I are writing, we don't use accent marks and simply use Vo-Vo and Vu-Vu...maybe because when children, we didn't know how to properly pronounce or spell the Portuguese terms.  What children call their grandparents when little seems to stick forever no matter the language!

The Catholic Church (and the Civil Registries) are going to be very formal and always use avó and avô. Spoken languages are always different than the formal written form.

Hello Cheri !

We aren't sure,  but around 1902.
Cheri , my sister took a DNA test and you appeared as part of our family tree. She actually exchanged a few emails with you a few years ago. Her name is Lúcia Leão and I'll ask her to get back in touch with you.

Thank you
