Anecdotally he may have lived in Nordeste.  I just finished reading ALL the digitized baptism records for the entire island of Sao Miguel for Novembers in 1884 and 1885 and found nothing!

Parents were Francisco Cabral Mello (or Melo, or deMelo) and Rosa Costa

Anybody else in this line looking for this?

Hi Sarah M,

You are looking for a Manuel Cabral de Mello born Nov. 1884 on Sao Miguel island? Where are you getting this information? Many times, our ancestors' birth info was off - way off.

Sarah, when you said he listed his birth on all those things he completed in the U.S., what are those things? Basically, I'm asking for the source documentation. Because it's kinda weird to write November 1884 on American documents. They want the full date. So what are these things he completed?

If your grandmother gave her father's birth for a local history book, I'd file that one under circumstantial evidence. Or just iffy. Your grandmother wasn't there when he was born. It's a clue, but I'd keep looking for other clues.

Yes, you'd have to read all the 1880s for every single Manuel born. That's the needle in the haystack approach. No one on the list has him in their database, otherwise they would have said so.

DNA has the potential to point you to a freguesia, but it depends on how many testers from that freguesia have tested thus far.

Cabra de Melo can be found in almost every village, but it my experience the largest number of that name is in the Achada- Nordeste areas.

If his (Manuel's) immigration into America is correct and if he is born late in the year, then he's the Manuel Cabral de Mello coming into America in Nov. 1902. But he's born about 1883. A Google search of his name and Martha's Vineyard states a few brothers. On was a Francisco Cabral de Mello and his information stated his freguesia was Achada (I found him on the Passaportes). So went to Achada and searched late 1883. He's born and baptized in Dec. of 1883, not 1884 or 1885 where Sarah was looking. He's #77 bottom right. The parents match and the mother is the daughter of a Costa family. Sarah's DNA should turn up a match to me or my dad.

The one I found had a margin note. It looked like it said "America." Having 2 Manuels is rare.
