Penang BN Youth calls for scrapping of raw water intake charges

GEORGE TOWN, 5 April 2013 : Penang Barisan Nasional Youth has called on the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBA) Sdn Bhd to ease the financial burden of Penangites by scrapping its raw water intake charges amounting to a hefty RM20 million.

Its information chief H'ng Khoon Leng urged the water utility company's chairman Lim Guan Eng, who is also the chief minister to order PBA to abolish its 3 sen per cubic meter water surcharge.

H'ng said consumers in Penang had not experienced any savings in water bills for the past two years following the ruling since 2010, making the surcharge meaningless.

"Penangites have been burdened by the unneccesary water surcharge for far too long," H'ng said

Showing a PBA 2011 annual report at a press conference here today, H'ng told pressmen that PBA had made RM10.9 million and he believed the amount would have doubled by the end of 2012.

H'ng claimed PBA had paid the amount to the State Secretariat Incorporated, raising the possibility that the company could have been disguised as political tool, especially in the lead-up to the 13th general election.

"Almost all (seven out of ten) of the PBA board of directors are politicians.

"We are concerned that the big sum of money could have been misused by the Penang government for its political agenda so the surcharge should be removed as soon as possible," he said.
