If and when the avian flu hits, what can be done to protect one-self
from being infected? Is hand washing and wearing masks to protect the
mouth and nose enough, or will eye gear be necessary as well?
Disposable gloves are certainly a wise decision when in contact with
the general public, but what other precautions may be taken, if any? If
the worst-case scenario hits and widespread infections are occurring,
do people intend to quit their jobs and stay in-doors? With vaccine
production likely to take between 3-6 months after the pandemic starts,
and supplies likely to be wholly inadequate, how long do we believe
individuals can hold out? I hate to sound such a paranoid note, but
from what I am hearing and reading, the likelihood that each of us will
be on our own is great.

Well, on Nightline the panel addressed this issue of the "waves" of
communities being hit. Not all places will be hit at once. I think once
it hits your town the only safe place will be at home for 4-6 weeks
until the infection threat passes from your area. Sounds like the
Plague, dosen't it? And the Tamiflu dosage according to the professor
on the panel has to 3-5 times higher than the normal dosage to be
effective. And it has to be done within a few hours of infection.

I agree that we will be on our own, the only ones we can protect are
ourselves and our family and thats how every one will be looking at it.
If the pandemic does reach the United States my family and i will be
staying indoors days, weeks, even months until it is gone. We won't
even take the risk of coming in contact with the outside world and
maybe that sounds outrageous but i have my families lives to think
about.
