Dashboard display problem...

I own a 2001 Audi A3 TDi 1.9 Sport (110bhp) and I'm having a problem
with the dashboard lighting and speed and rpm dials.
>From a cold start neither the speed needle or the rpm needle move at
all and the needles don't light up. Neither does the digital clock or
the mileometer light up. Also, the backlights for the interior light
switches and cigarette lighter don't light up.
Sometimes, but not always, if I then stop the engine after the car has
warmed up and come back to it and restart the car everything works
fine.
On other occasions the needles move but don't light up.
Does anyone have any experience of a problem like this, or can anyone
please give me any ideas what might be causing it. I've tried making
sure all the fuses are securely in place and this hasn't helped.
