Possible? Yes. Anything is possible, with enough time, money, and know-how.
Practical? No. Converting FWD to AWD would require you to have a
pretty complete donor car, and you would need to swap everything from
the tranny on out over from the AWD car. But wait! If I'm not
mistaken, you would also need to cut out the floor pan from the AWD
car and get that in your FWD car, to make room for the rear
drivetrain.
You're almost definitely going to hit the point where it's just not
worth all the work and money.
I picked up my '90 80 Quattro last year for US$1300, and I'm guessing
that doing that swap will end up costing you more than that once all
is said and done. If it was a car that wasn't available in AWD, and
you really love the chassis, I would say do the conversion, but since
AWD was a factory available option on the 80's, you're better off
buying one that came from the factory with AWD, IMO.
