A3 Gearbox

Hello,

I have just bought a A3 Quattro 1.8T (X reg) and typically its broken
down. Well the Gearbox is broken. 5th and 6th have gone completely,
gearstick is all limip in the 5th and 6th positions. 1st and 3rd are
hard to select, I can only get into 1st having been in reverse
first....!! This keeps changing though sometimes 2nd is hard to select
and 1st is fine? It feels like the plate that the geearstick follows
is loose but two garages have said this can't be the case (?) and its
the acutal gears.

Has anybody else had the same thing? Or similar?
