Judy Holliday re-creates her Broadway role of telephone operator Ella Peterson in Bells are Ringing. Ella works for Susanswerphone, a hole-in-the-wall answering service run by her cousin Sue (Jean Stapleton). Ella can't help but become involved in the lives of her customers, which leads to several interesting consequences, clashes with the police, bookies , and a blocked playwright (Dean Martin) whom she takes a motherly  (and then some!)
Judy Holliday is luminescent in this, her last screen role. The film's songs, by Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Jule Styne, include the hit numbers "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over"
“Better Broadway musicals have come to Hollywood, but few have been
translated to the screen so effectively….Miss Holliday, as might be expected,
steals show with a performance of remarkable variety and gusto. Her
outsatanding turn occurs near the end of the picture, when she demonstrates
her verve and versatility on the amusing ‘I’m Going Back’ (Wher I Can Be Me, at
the Bonjour Tristesse Brassiere Factory.” Variety 6/8/60
(Directed Vincente Minnelli, United States, 1960,, 126 min., color, Unrated  )
