Introduction to Green Woodworking

Transform a log into a cooking spatula!  Learn the techniques needed to create your personal cooking utensils using traditional hand tools.  This workshop is appropriate for learners 14 and up.

Todd White has been a professional cabinet/furniture maker since 1989.  He taught green woodwork at Glasshouse College in Stourbridge, UK from 2006 to 2012.  Currently he teaches woodwork at the Philadelphia Waldorf School, the DASH program for Lancaster City School District, and the Samara program in Harrisburg, PA.

Mother Nature as Sacred Teacher and Healer

Nature is hard-wired to heal. She is constantly scattering seeds and animal poop to reclaim urban lots or abandoned lands. She also offers subtle healing experiences to all who chose to leave the comforts of their cars or homes to walk amongst the trees and wild areas. Who or what is Nature and what does she offer us as a wise teacher of sacred ways, of healing ways? How can we connect more deeply with this very wise teacher who is our Mother here on this planet? This workshop/talk is based on award-winning author, Mare Cromwell’s, eighteen years of studies with Native American teachers along with her background as a professional sacred gardener and environmental educator.

Mare Cromwell is an award-winning author and nature mystic. Her first two books are Messages from Mother.... Earth Mother and If I gave you God's phone number.... Searching for Spirituality in America. Her third book: The Great Mother Bible will be out by in September, 2014. She has studied with Native American teachers for more than eighteen years and sits on the World Council for Wisdom Gatherings. Mare offers healing sessions locally and long-distance based on the premise we are all connected and the love of the Great Mother can heal all. (Note: she is a huge fan of Sacred Silliness.)

Bread Baking 101

This course explores yeast, sourdough, and quick breads, along with granola and cookies.  We look at techniques for sweet and savory baking, and methods to bring out flavor in your baking.

Roger Williams is the beekeeper of record at Spoutwood.  He is a bread baker of long standing.  His engineering background informs his practical approach to bread baking and his love of good food informs his aesthetic approach.

Chants of the Inner Wild; A Creative Writing Workshop

Since the old days and the old ways, songs, stories, and poems have been the way prayers were said, victories were celebrated, and stories were remembered.  Join Poet Laureate Emeritus and Spoutwood Writing in Nature Retreat leader, Carla Christopher, as she shares beautiful invocations, chants, myths, and poems from cultures who have celebrated the wild ways of nature, and then invites you to create your own in a fun and highly interactive writing workshop.  This workshop is appropriate for learners 13 and up.

Carla Christopher is an award-winning poet, as well as spoken word artist, publisher, producer, television personality, speaker, and educator based in York, Pennsylvania.  She was York’s 4th Poet Laureate and is currently the Arts & Cultural Community Liaison for York City.  Carla also hosts Culture and Main, York's Weekly Cultural Showcase on White Rose Community Television, teaches Creative Writing with the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Institute, serves on the advisory board for Dr. Nathaniel Gadsen's Writers Wordshop in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and is the Pennsylvania Poetry Society's 2014 Grand Prize First Place Annual Competition Winner.

Make Your Own Medicinal Herbal Salves and Balms

Have you ever wondered how to use some of the Herbs in your garden or in your local woods to help heal yourself and your family?  Medicinal Balms and Salves are a versatile and effective way to include the healing properties of Herbs into your Medicine Cabinet with little worry or fuss.  Once the skill of making these simple formulations yourself is learned, you can expand into cosmetic applications and deeper healing remedies as well.  In this Workshop, you will learn how to infuse and preserve your base oil with the healing qualities of  Home Grown & Wild Harvested Herbs.  This infused oil is the base for many healing products, including massage oil, soap, lotions, serums, and straight oil applications.  In this workshop you will walk away with the knowledge of the difference between Salves and Balms, and will have an opportunity to create a version of both to bring home with you.

Alison Hunley is a self taught wild herbalist who is still learning each and every day from the plants around her.  Her inspiration to learn more about Herbs began as a young child in Cape Cod Massachusetts, where she was raised.  The influence of the women around her was strong, and she was intrigued that the Echinacea Tincture her Mother fed to them each winter was from gardens she played in nearby.  She then began harvesting wild onion and other easily identified herbs, preparing them for herself and her sister in various ways.  From there, her interest and knowledge grew.  As an adult, she began incorporating these Herbs int her life to treat her sons Chronic Lyme and Eczema Conditions, and to heal her family and friends in a large variety of ways.  She is also owner of A. E. Hunley Apothecarie & Herbs, a Medicinal Salve and Balm Company which uses only Wild Harvested and locally grown Herbs in its product line.
