A Message to American Academics
Greetings of knowledge, culture, achievement, and history,
We extend our sincere greetings to you and, through you, to academics throughout the world. We express our deep appreciation for the role that American, European, and other leading universities have played in advancing human civilization, producing knowledge, and promoting scientific progress. For decades, these institutions have served as beacons of learning and centers of intellectual and cultural enlightenment. For this reason, many people in developing nations have regarded them as models to emulate and examples of academic excellence.
We also salute American students and students around the world who stood in solidarity with the Palestinian people during the war in Gaza and raised their voices in defense of justice, human dignity, and human rights. These students have demonstrated remarkable moral courage and have shown that a living conscience transcends national borders, ethnic backgrounds, and political affiliations.
At a time when student movements across many Western universities organized demonstrations and sit-ins in support of Palestinian rights, many universities in the Arab world did not allow their students to express their views peacefully. In some cases, students faced disciplinary measures or expulsion for participating in activities supporting Gaza. This painful reality compels us to reflect on the true mission of the university and its responsibility to protect freedom of thought and expression.
For many years, students from the Arab world have traveled to American universities seeking knowledge in an environment that respects intellectual freedom, academic independence, and diversity of opinion. Yet we feel deep concern when we witness prestigious academic institutions subjected to political pressures, financial interests, or lobbying groups that may influence academic decision-making, restrict open debate, or result in punitive actions against students and faculty members because of their political or humanitarian positions.
The strength of a university is measured not only by its laboratories, funding, rankings, or research output. It is also measured by its commitment to protecting intellectual freedom, encouraging open dialogue, defending the right to dissent, and resisting all forms of political, economic, or ideological pressure, regardless of their source.
We write this message in a spirit of respect and hope, not hostility or condemnation. We continue to believe that American universities possess the capacity to correct their course and reaffirm their historic role as guardians of academic freedom and as institutions dedicated to truth, knowledge, and justice.
We hope that you will regard this message as a historical document expressing the sentiments of many academics, intellectuals, and students around the world who continue to believe that universities must remain independent, free, courageous, and committed above all to knowledge, humanity, and human dignity.

رسالة إلى الأكاديميين الأمريكيين
تحية العلم والثقافة والإنجاز والتاريخ،
نحييكم، ونحيي من خلالكم أكاديميي العالم كافة، ونعبّر عن تقديرنا العميق للدور الذي قامت به الجامعات الأمريكية والأوروبية والمؤسسات الأكاديمية الرائدة في بناء الحضارة الإنسانية، وإنتاج المعرفة، وصناعة التقدم العلمي. لقد كانت هذه الجامعات، لعقود طويلة، منارات للعلم ومراكز للإشعاع الحضاري والفكري، ولذلك نظر إليها كثيرون في دول العالم النامي باعتبارها نموذجاً يُحتذى وقدوةً أكاديميةً وإنسانية.
كما نحيي من خلالكم الطلبة الأمريكيين وطلبة العالم الذين وقفوا إلى جانب الشعب الفلسطيني خلال الحرب على غزة، ورفعوا أصواتهم دفاعاً عن العدالة والكرامة الإنسانية وحقوق الإنسان. لقد قدم هؤلاء الطلبة نموذجاً مشرفاً للشجاعة الأخلاقية والالتزام الإنساني، وأثبتوا أن الضمير الحي لا يعرف حدوداً أو جنسيات.
وفي الوقت الذي شهد فيه العالم مظاهرات واعتصامات طلابية واسعة دعماً للحقوق الفلسطينية في عدد من الجامعات الغربية، فإن كثيراً من الجامعات العربية لم تسمح لطلبتها بالتعبير السلمي عن آرائهم، بل تعرض بعض الطلبة للفصل أو العقوبات بسبب مشاركتهم في أنشطة تضامنية مع غزة. وهذا الواقع المؤلم يدفعنا إلى مراجعة مفهوم الجامعة ودورها الحقيقي في حماية حرية الفكر والتعبير.
لقد توجه كثير من أبناء العالم العربي إلى الجامعات الأمريكية أملاً في التعلم داخل بيئة تحترم الحرية الفكرية والاستقلال الأكاديمي والتعددية. لكننا نشعر بقلق عميق عندما نرى مؤسسات أكاديمية عريقة تتعرض لضغوط سياسية أو مالية أو جماعات ضغط تؤثر في استقلال القرار الأكاديمي، أو تحد من حرية التعبير والنقاش داخل الحرم الجامعي، أو تؤدي إلى معاقبة بعض الطلبة وأعضاء الهيئات التدريسية بسبب مواقفهم السياسية أو الإنسانية.
إن قوة الجامعة لا تُقاس فقط بعدد المختبرات أو حجم التمويل أو التصنيفات العالمية، بل تُقاس أيضاً بقدرتها على حماية حرية الفكر، وتشجيع الحوار، والدفاع عن الحق في الاختلاف، ورفض الخضوع لأي نفوذ سياسي أو اقتصادي أو أيديولوجي مهما كان مصدره.
إننا نكتب هذه الرسالة بدافع الاحترام والأمل، لا بدافع العداء أو الإدانة. فما زلنا نؤمن بأن الجامعات الأمريكية تمتلك القدرة على تصحيح المسار، واستعادة دورها التاريخي بوصفها حصناً للحرية الأكاديمية ومنبراً للحقيقة والمعرفة والعدالة.
ونأمل أن تعتبروا هذه الرسالة وثيقة تاريخية تعبّر عن مشاعر كثير من الأكاديميين والمثقفين والطلبة حول العالم، الذين ما زالوا يؤمنون بأن الجامعة يجب أن تبقى مستقلة، حرة، وشجاعة في مواجهة الضغوط، ومنحازة دائماً للعلم والإنسان والكرامة الإنسانية.
