Gallium Software's FontTastic fails to run under XFree86 4.3.0. I am
using 4.42 of Applixware on modern versions of Linux, Slackware 9.1
and 10.2. Kernel on 9.1 is 2.4.22 and 2.4.31 on 10.2. Earlier versions
of XFree and Linux worked fine!

Under tools I pick Font Installer, then I get the start dialog box,
press OK, then *poof* gone!

Does anyone know something about this product? Can anyone offer
sympathy and a work around?

TIA!

You will have to upgrade to Applixware 6, you can download it from

Bonjour Philip!

Thanks for your reply. What happened to the old days when we fixed
problems with software rather than just replace it? Maybe I am stuck
in the 80s, but I used to know that software like FontTastic looked
for things like fonts in certain areas that may have been moved in
later versions. If you know your product, you can go in to things like
configuration files and fix it. I traced the problem with strace to
xfm but could get no further. Where is the fun of using UNIX or Linux
if you can't dive into the weeds and fix a problem?

Merci!

Bonjour Sauvegarde !

Ah, I don't know where the fun would be, there are too many variables,
libraries, bug fixes, etc. Applixware 4.42 was released in 1999,
sometimes it's best to go with the flow instead of playing salmon !
If you are a non-commercial home user, try the home user edition, I'm
sure you will be pleased.

Best regards,
Philip
