The 2010 Spring Sailing Season is now underway for the UCI Sailing Team and it looks to be a busy one. With the team just returning from a warm up in Hawaii then off to San Diego in 2 weeks for the first of the South Series (qualifying regattas for the PCC’s) and then for Valentines weekend they will be hosting a South Series, competing in it and sending a team to Tampa, FL for the Mendelblatt Team Race and it just goes on from there. Remember that they can always use your help and support. It can range from making a donation (we can now accept credit card donations over the phone, contact Danielle @ danielle...@ussailing.net for more details) showing up at a practice, housing them at a regatta, coaching a regatta or donating airline miles for a flight.
Check out this report from the PJ Wenner Rainbow Invitational Regatta:
This weekend Brian Hoover, Rex Cameron, and Colin Averill sailed in the PJ Wenner invite regatta in Honolulu. We arrived Friday afternoon and practiced with UH and other teams near Sand Island. We stayed with the UH team over the weekend and they also allowed us to use one of their sailors to crew for Rex since there were only three of us who went to the regatta. Rex and his crew from UH sailed in A division and Brian and Colin sailed B division. Sailing was tough around Sand Island, winds were shifty and playing the shifts was a major factor in order to be successful at this regatta. We learned a lot about seeing wind up ahead and what that meant for our boat. On Saturday the wind was blowing from the island and it was very shifty. On Sunday the wind direction changed and was coming from offshore, it was more consistent but we still found it challenging. This regatta was very beneficial for the three of us who went because PCC’s will also be in Hawaii during the spring and hopefully we have gained knowledge about sailing there. UCI placed 13 out of 19 teams at the regatta, this was an important learning regatta and as a team we are ready to work hard for a strong season.
ZOT ZOT ZOT!!
