Creation of temporary database

Hi there,

I am a PhD student from Germany and use a laptop from my university that has certain security measures in place. Unfortunately, I can't open any files in AntConc. Our IT team says that this is because AntConc creates a temporary database when a project is opened, namely in the path where the programme is located. However, we do not have any write permissions on our university laptops, which is why the database can't be created. Is it possible to offer the option in AntConc to create the temporary database at a location of your choice, i.e. to give the option of changing the database path in the software settings?

Hi Berit,

If you are using Windows, you can use the portable version of AntConc, which should work in your environment. Unfortunately, there is no portable option for Macintosh (due to its very strict security design).

Dear Laurence,

I've just tried it again and realised that our IT support had already used the portable version (version 4.3.1). When I open a .txt file as a corpus, the loading circle appears and nothing happens. Do you have any other ideas?

Hi Berit,

With the portable version, can you load the demo corpus and view some KWIC results. If so, the problem is most likely with your file. Try loading a simple Word file as a quick corpus and let me know if that works.
