Hi Laurence,

I have a question about searching for numbers and special characters in AntConc.

For my research, I need to search for strings (tags) in the corpus that include letters, numbers and round brackets ().  When I search for these tags it says “no hits found!”. I was wondering if there is a way to include numbers and special characters in the search, and for numbers to be recognised in the ‘Cluster’ tool [e.g. frequency for ((CS1)), ((CS2)), ((CS3)) etc.]?

Also, in the KWIC search, is there a way to have the hits show in the order in which they appear in the corpus (instead of ordering by value or by frequency)?

Thank you very much!

Kind regards,

Jessica

Hi Jessica,

To search for non-letter characters, you need to modify the token definition when you build your corpus via the Corpus Manager->token definition option. In your case, you can simply add the "numbers" category and then append the brackets. There is a testing area when you can make sure your tokens will appear as you want.

In the KWIC search, if you select to order by ROW ID, you'll get the order as the search items appear in the corpus. At the moment, if the search term case is different, each variant will be ordered separately (by appearance in the corpus), but in the next release this slight inconvenience will be fixed.

I hope that helps!

Laurence.

Hi Gustavo,

When you create the corpus in the corpus manager, you'll find the token definition settings below where you set the name. For the 'Quick Corpus' option in the file menu, the same settings will be used.

I hope that helps!

Laurence.

Hello Laurence,

I saw Jessica's question above, on how to have the hits show in the order in which they appear in the corpus (instead of ordering by value or by frequency), and your answer - but I only have value and frequency as sort options, and cannot find any setting in the settings that seems to correspond - does that option still exist?

Thank you very much!
Ulrike

Hi Ulrike,
I think you want to sort by File ID and then perhaps Row ID, using Order by Value. See below:

Is that correct?
Laurence.
