WordCloud - Korean Character display problem

Korean characters are not displayed with WordCloud, only view rectengular.

Hi Eddy,

Korean characters should display perfectly. Perhaps you did not choose a Korean font in the controller settings. If you continue to find that the software does not display the characters, can you send a paragraph of Korean to this email thread and I'll test it myself.

Sorry to late response.
Global Settings & Font settings are set with the same fonts.
Here are Korean sample sentenses.

스스로 간지럼 태우는 것은 거의 불가능에 가깝다. 다른 사람이 만질 때보다 스스로 자기 몸을 만질 때 뇌 영역 일부가 덜 활성화된다. 소뇌영역. 조현병 환자들은 활성화 정도가 비슷하여 자신을 간지럼 태울 수 있다. 즉 조현병 환자들은 자기발생적 행위와 자신의 행동이 아닌 것을 구분하는 능력이 없다는 것을 의미한다.

Hi Eddy,

Thanks for the Korean text. As I suspected, you just need to change the font in the WordCloud font settings.  I changed the font on my Mac to AppleGothic and everything worked fine. See below:

Dear  Laurence,  Thank you for your support.

It might because of the font file name. At Windows operating system, Korean font file name is represented also Korean characters.

If I select English font file name with Korean fonts, word cloud works. I think AntConc may not manage Unicode file names.

It might be due to the fact that Windows uses UTF-16LE as its internal character encoding instead of the UTF-8 international standard. Then again, I'm using a Windows Japanese system and don't have these issues. So, it could be something special about the Korean Windows OS. What happens if you simply select the default encoding for your system (as you see in my screenshot where I chose AppleGothic and everything worked fine).

Dear Laurence,

If I simply select the default encoding in Korean Windows O.S., the display of WordCloud is dependent to the fonts.

Almost fonts(Arial, Microsoft Sans Serif etc) display rectangles, some(돋움, 돋움체 etc) are non, some(Hancom Gothic, IBM Plex Sans KR, Orbit etc)  work well.

I cannot remember the application name but that application S/W didn't work with Korean character file names also.

In that case, usually I changed the file names to English name then it works well.

You seem confused about what I'm saying. The Korean Windows OS will only use *one* default encoding. It is used to show things like file names and menu options in File Explorer. I'm asking what happens if you choose *that* font in AntConc. My guess is that the system default font is Hancom Gothic, which is why it works well. As you say, though, it doesn't seem that AntConc is not reading the font file names for the other fonts. I'll look into this more.
