Dear Professor Laurence,

I was introduced to the AntConc software this year and I really think it could help me with my research. I have watched your tutorial videos and a few others to get familiar with the tools.

In my study, I want to analyze the use of metadiscourse markers in articles. Specifically, I would like to group these markers across the files so I can obtain frequency counts—for example, grouping words like "could" and "maybe" under the category of "hedges," and so on.

I would like to know if this is possible using the program. I tried using TagAnt to tag the markers, but I couldn't get it to work, perhaps because my corpus is in Portuguese and that language option is not available in the software.

I apologize if this is a simple or confusing question, but as I mentioned, I am just starting out with the tool. Any guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Best regards, Alexandre

Hi Alexandre,

Yes, you can do this in AntConc, and you don't need to POS-tag the
Portuguese corpus just to group metadiscourse markers such as
could/maybe into categories such as hedges.

The simplest approach is to create a list of the forms you want to
treat as belonging to each category and search for them together.
Depending on exactly what output you want, you could use a regex
search in the Concordance/Concordance Plot tools, or build
category-based word lists and compare the resulting frequencies across
your files.

As for TagAnt, in fact, it does support Portuguese.

However, this tool is mainly for part-of-speech tagging, so it isn't
really the right tool for assigning your own functional categories
such as “hedge”.

I hope that helps!

Best regards,

Laurence

Dear Professor Laurence,

Thank you very much for your reply! It really helped.

I have been considering creating word lists for this research. Although I have to admit that I still do not know exactly how to create and use one, I will study and learn how to do it.

Again, thank you very much for your support!

Best regards from Brazil,

Alexandre

You're welcome!

If your candidate lists are small, you can just search for them directly:
cat|dog|mouse
Otherwise, you could use the advanced search and load in lists directly.

I hope that helps!
Laurence.
