Re:
Dear Representative ________:
As a constituent and someone who cares about safeguarding our wildlife and natural resources from the threat of global warming, I strongly urge you to pass comprehensive global warming legislation that includes dedicated policies and funding to help wildlife survive in a changing climate.
Scientists warn that global warming could threaten one-third of the world's known species with extinction.
Polar bears are already being pushed toward extinction in the wild as rising temperatures rob them of the habitat that they need to survive. The pika and the wolverine in the Rockies, our nation's waterfowl, even fish, shrimp and oysters are already in trouble.
Climate legislation must reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are driving global warming, but we cannot stop there.
Comprehensive legislation must also address the negative impacts that global warming is already having on the natural world. These impacts threaten the air we breathe, the water we drink, possibly robbing us of future medical advances in pharmacology, and the decay of our agriculture, forests, and fisheries, among countless other benefits we derive from nature.
Global warming poses two equally critical challenges: curbing the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and dealing with the effects that are already being seen and felt on the ground and in our oceans and waterways.
Congress must address both simultaneously in order to maintain America's natural resources and biodiversity that are the backbone of a vibrant economy and public health.
I strongly urge you to support dedicating an average of $7 billion annually, roughly just 5% of the anticipated revenue from new global warming cap and trade legislation to safeguard wildlife and ecosystems in a warming world.
We all rely on nature for survival, so we must strengthen our efforts to address the negative impacts global warming is already having our wildlife. When we reduce global warming pollution and invest in possible ways to safeguard nature and wildlife, we are not only helping nature, we are helping ourselves.
Thank you for considering my comments. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
